Title: Wet feet on a wet road
Post by qrancik on 02/08/07 at 09:07:02

Hi guys,

Today I rode on my Savage on a wet road, after it was raining. My shoes and lower parts of my trousers got soaked wet. Quite annoying. The same during a little rain – a light waterproof jacket and trousers are more than enough, but from my knees down I would need a good pair of wellingtons (or whatever you call them in the US).

It seems that the front fender is too short for a good protection. Did you experience this too? Any solutions?

Yep.  Short stylish fender that isn't worth much in the rain :P

I got these from JC Whitney for about $3.50 US.  Then I cut some steel strips and painted them black to support the mudflap.

As it is I bought 2 sets, and used the rear flap for the front.  I thought it looked better.

Aside from that a good set of boots and rain suit work better...

I used the exact same set, based on Greg's suggestion.  I didn't add the steel strips but used the supplied washers and they've been working well for over two years now.  I should add that it greatly reduces road yuck on the engine but it doesn't keep my legs dry.

When it's just a light spray comin off the front wheel I set my feet up on the engine. I do that when it's pouring too. The wettest I ever got was about 30 miles of solid downpour. Stopped at a light & when I put my feet down the ignition shocked me evrytime the thing fired. I was soaked! I had a leather jacket, a leather face shield & leather chaps. I weighed a BUNCH more when I got home than when I left.

And even that full fender didn't keep me dry on the 2003 trip to Lander WY for the FSSNOC Rally there. Was snowing and raining the last 2 days, but we never turned back, maybe should have considered a reroute but we did not want to plow the same ground twice. Brother's HD Road King was better but he was pretty soaked too. Big fender does help with the road grit that was thrown up under the windhshield and in my face with the stock fender. Fender is aftermarket option from J & P if anyone else is interested. Max

Might want to go bigger still :)

Is this cool or what?

Thanks a lot for the ideas! I will do some mods quite soon, I think.

The last photo is really cool!

The leg gators?  Do they protect the boot as well?  How are they if they touch hot engine parts?

A set of black ballistic nylon gaiters such as hikers wear not only keeps the lower legs dry, they hold warmth too.

I like my Leather Legs (http://www.leatherlegs.net).  I just got the basic black (below).

Leather legs look pretty good to me. Better stone protection than my gaiters.

I think there's a pretty good chance.  They are pretty sturdy.  I just pulled mine out from under my desk (used 'em this morning) and they look to be about 1/8" thick.  I'd be seriously impressed with a snake that could get through these and my Red Wings together.

;D

You think that's rough?  If you think about the details involved, my spouse doesn't like to drink too much while wearing hers.  Rest stops become even more complex :P

I recently got a pair for my birthday but I haven't worn 'em yet.  Overall, they seem to be a fairly nice set: lined, heavyweight naked leather cowhide (not buffalo), heavy-duty stainless YKK zippers.  I still need to Nikwax 'em before I use 'em.

Paladin,
Yes they cover the boot as well as the leg, I had to sew the toe a little shorter( small feet) ;D. no problem with the heat, so far. but if in rain gear or these , i try to keep them out a bit.
