Title: TailLights
Post by Paladin on 01/28/07 at 17:44:24

Removed the stock taillight.  Replaced the license plate light with a stop/tail/license light:

A rather large .mov file of the lights in action:

Can't seem to make it play.....?

What are you going to do with the newfound real estate?

Corrected the link -- it was case sensitive -- .MOV, not .mov.  Be patient, it's a BIG file.  Shows the taillights/brakelights and turn signal operation with the $50 LEDs in the turn signal housings.

I'm planning a 3500 mile trip in September.  Will be packing stuff in the saddlebags and in a duffle that will sit cross the pillion.  Behind the sissybar is reserved for a bedroll/tarp-or-tent.   I prefer motels, but I like the option of being able to pull off out of sight of the road and taking a nap.

On the other hand, a 2.25 gallon Tour Tank will mount to the rear of the sissy bar.

The catseye taillight was a Christmas Gift, might have come from Accessory International. (http://www.accessoryinternational.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=AI&Product_Code=PUDS270001&Category_Code=DRAG_SPECIALTIES)

Remove saddlebags and seats.  License light is held on with a pair of 3/8" nuts, pulled, disconnect the two bullet connectors under the pillion and pull out the wires.  The new taillight bolted right in the existing holes, with the addition of a couple of flat washers.  Also added a ground wire under one of the nuts, using a ring connector, altho' it is not actually necessary.  Taillight is held with three 10mm bolts, pulled, cut the wires near the bulb.  Put bullet receptacles on the ends of the wires, matching bullet connectors on the wires from the new taillight.  Plug together, dress up the wires.  Replace seat & bags.  Done.  Just have a few holes in the fender that need a little bondo and paint.

If I make it.  I reserve the option to change plans at any point -- such as quitting around Kingman and canceling reservations -- hence the need for the sleepingbag/tent.  But I don't think that'll be the case.  I did 350 miles last May, from 8pm Friday after work to 7am Saturday morning, and was neither tired nor sore.  Suprised myself.

When I travel my attitude is that "If you don't care where you are you can never be lost."

Those are awsome! If they are that bright in the light i can just bet they are great at night.

Actually, the pictures were taken at or slightly after dusk.  Camera has good low-light capability.  The new taillight takes the same bulb as the old, and thus has the same brightness.

That's the place, about five hours out from L.A..   Which is about the time I'm going to be feeling somewhat amazed that I'm not dead and will continue the trek -- or when I'll be ready to push the bike into a ditch and hitch home.  Last long bike trip I took was about 25 years ago.

p.s.  "Dueces neva looses" ??  We were saying that in Detroit in the early '60's.

Well, they say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery!

I used a MID-USA p/n 11201 that I picked up from Hi-Way Choppers here in town.

The box says it doesn't meet current DOT specs though and isn't to be used on bikes manufactured after 1972 unless for show or off-road use.

Anyone know why that would be?

Doesn't matter.  The DOT requirement is only for what is imported/manufactured/sold.   As a seller they cannot sell you a replacement lamp a vehicle that does not meet the specs for the year vehicle.

As far as required lighting goes only two things matter -- your State Vehicle Code;  and Safety.  For safety you might consider turning the turn signals into stop/run lights to give you redundency.

Well, time to throw away my cateye tailight. I bought one a year ago, installed it, and now everyone is going that route...

Mine is tucked under the fender though...

Helps that I'm running a Rebel rear fender, more space to hide the light. It will hit the trash too. Going with a full coverage 1930s type instead. Should be on shortly.

Cateye is only fractionally smaller than the stock light for surface area. Run it if you like it.

Thanks for the replies!

That's next on the to-do list x 2: 1 set for the S40 and 1 set for my C50T.

I'm also thinking about the tailBlazer and wondering if I should get just the 20WS integrated bulb unit only or the 100HD unit that mounts under the seat and wire the turn signal stop/tail LEDs to it as well...

I'd like to know more about that mod!

Lots of work. FXR/FXD, FL, EL and VL parts. Once it all fits I'll post it up. Basicall an FL one piece fender, FXD struts, beehive tailight and misc bits of old hardware adapted to fit.

Remember, I'm the sicko that put Norton fork gaiters and T-140 peg rubber on a Savage...with 15" rise apehangers.
