Before taking the head off, I checked the cam chain tensioner, and there is 18mm of tensioner piston showing. From what I have read, this means that I need a new chain. How about the tensioner/chain guides? Should I replace both of those as well? I am surprised that I would need a new chain at 5,000 miles, although I have no way of knowing how the bike was treated for those 5,000 miles!

service limit on the chain is128.9mm(5.07 in) measure 21 pins with vernier calipers with chain pulled tight...
cant find spec on tensioner except to check for smooth
slide of the pushrod ...

Even with the chain below the service limit measurement you need to replace the chain and the rear guide.
Re-use the tensioner if the bore is round and the piston is not sloppy in the bore.
Dont re-use the gasket of the cover( notice the bead of dried sealing along the oilgallery) and remember the nut on the primairy drive gear has LEFTHAND thread.
