Title: Proof for non Believers
Post by mavrik on 01/14/07 at 09:30:08

Well I changed my saddlebags.

The death threats and the thought of being kicked off the sight were too much.

So I gave into public pressure. Here's a before and after

Before http://w1.bikepics.com/pics/2006/08/16/bikepics-657765-800.jpgAfter http://w2.bikepics.com/pics/2007/01/14/bikepics-771336-full.jpg

Does it make it harder or easier to get to the bolts when removing the seat?

I like the before also, seems more aerodynamic.

For some reason I like the before. Maybe it's me but the slant bags just don't seem to flow with the lines of the bike. Could be the angle of the photos. But what the hay, If you like the bags, wear them whatever which way you want.

So, I guess from lookin at th pics you stuck them on the first time like you wanted them
Others told ya they were backwards? You listened? Why?

You had them like you wanted. There is no functional difference, IE, holds more one way than the other. The way you had them gave better clearance for the passenger & was pleasing to the eye. Folks who are so stuck on doing it the way everybody does it are shortchanging themselves.

If someone will die for me when it's my turn I will let them live my life for me. Otherwise, I am gonna have to say, NO..

The only REAL difference I see here is a passenger would likely be happier with the "after".  Other than that I don't think it really matters.

Definitely the after pic. Slant bags are designed to flow with the angle of the shock, to avoid getting damaged. However you mount them, throwovers always look a bit goofy. And yes, I do have bags on one of my bikes...

That bike is a Vulcan 800A, a monoshock softail type frame with hidden suspension. So slants look beyond bad on it, although I have seen people run them.

I tried slants on my Savage. I tried taditional pony express type bags on it. Tool roll on the bars looked good.  Saddlebags did not.

If you like them backwards, run them backwards. If you like them as designed, run them as designed. If you don't like them, don't run them. Makes no difference...it is your bike, not any of ours.

Before looks goofy and just plain wrong. My vote is for mounting them the correct way  ;D

If you're going to give in to public pressure just go out and get yourself a Dyna Wide Glide.

Death threats -- tell 'em screw the one percenters -- you're a part of a one hundredth of one percent.  They don't want me riding in to handle the light work.  Kicked off the site?  We keep KLR650 around and he doesn't even have a Savage.

Seriously, look at the two pictures.  In one the bags follow the lines of the motorcycle, a jaunty upsweep to the rear -- far better than the second photo with the bags draggin' the ass end.   Put someone on the pillion -- the upslanted bags are shorted fore and aft, giving ust a tad more leg room.  The "correctly mounted" bags have a pointy up front to jab the thighs of your passenger.

None of which matters.  That bottle by the driver peg...  Bud Lite?   Do yourself a favor and get a case of Weihenstephaner Hefeweissbier Dunkel.

It's a dark wheat beer from the world's oldest brewery (founded in 1040.)  I got a case from Alpine Village for the the wife for Christmas.  Also available from BevMo and probably many other places.

HeY Savages: Thanks for all the comments. I was only kidding when I said I had death threats.

And of course nobody threatened to kick me off the site. Probably a flashback from Rob's mudpie corner.

I changed them to see what I thought of them, since being backwards originally seemed to work better for 2 up.

I will see how my girlfriend likes the pointy ends digging into her legs.  Cheers

I think it must be the angle of the photos that the before doesn't look too bad, but still my vote goes for the after. I just think it looks better. Not sure how comfortable a pillion would be with the bags anyway.

It looks like you have them mounted pretty far forward. Try sliding them towards the back of the bike.
