Title: Cam chain job observations
Post by franch on 01/14/07 at 03:17:59

Well it took 2 tries but got it right. I was off by 2 teeth on the camshaft gear.
the hardest part is loosening the clutch bolt without special tool . i put her in gear and held the brake down, but then had a hell of a time putting it back in nuetral to keep finding TDC(you have to keep rotating engine to remove the camshaft gear bolts)

I hear people talk about hearing the chain slapping at idle.
mine used to make a squeel/whine when in 5th gear, which i always attributed to the speedo. wrong. it was the cam chain. as soon as I got into 5th after new chain i noticed how quiet it was.
i would recommend anyone who is concerned about theirs pop off the right side cover to at least inspect how much travel is left in their tensioner.
mine was about to completely spring out from it's housing.
thanks again to everyone here for your help !

Like Barry said, How many miles on the cam chain?

Also, How hard do you ride? Does that really make a difference? You folks who have been in these engines & seen the results of different riding styles. Is it keeping the oil changed that determines the life of the chain? Is it high RPM that gets 'em? I hear a whine in 5th, maybe I better look in there.

Spose it's time to buy a gasket.. anyone have a good source? Dangittt,

there were 28600 odd miles on the 98 when I did the Cam chain.
I rode it since it had 16000 miles, before that I don't know but I ride 70% back roads with lots of down shifting and letting the engine do the breaking. 30% highway average 65mph. I like to use the low end and rip through 1st, 2nd and 3rd and then hang in 4th at 45-50 ish.

I should add that having a buddy sure helps when doing this job. second set of hands, eyes etc.
