Title: The Terminator runs, but. . .
Post by steveh on 01/05/07 at 16:58:54

I smell trouble, literally!
I put the on tank tonight, put gas in, and the bike started right up and idled fine. I rode it about 1/2 mile and shifted through all the gears. Life was good!
But back in the garage. . . lots of top end noise. I'm hoping the valves really need adjustment. There is also some smoke vapor coming up from the engine (oil burning off?) and it seems really hot. My temp gun shows about 250 degrees F at the middle of the cylinder, 300 degrees at the head near the front, and about 450 degrees near the exhaust port.  There is also an oil leak from one of the bolts on the cylinder head cover. The header pipe is a dark blue for about 6 inches after it leaves the exhaust port.
So what do you all think?
Tomorrow I will check valve clearance and rule that nise out.  Does anybody know what the engine temps should be after a short run?

sounds really lean if it blued the pipe that quick. OR maybe the valve timing is so bad it's pumping fire down the pipe.
Wait a bit, one of the guys who really knows will show up.

If I remember right you mentioned that bike had a supertrap with like 7 discs in it? Right.  You blued a pipe in 1/2 mile, that's kinda hot and LEAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hopefully a super trap guy will chime in on the proper number of discs (or what they run).  But I think seven seemed a bit low to me.  Also richen up the carb.

Good luck

I rode mine with the Trapp for the first time yesterday. 8 disks & a 150 main, stock pilot, whatever that is in an 05 model. No bluing, a golden highlight starting to show, the end cap, which I DID clean & polish per Trapps instructions prior to operation, turned almost black,, GRRRR
I blued my header so long ago I can't use that as a ruler to see how the Trapp is running, ie:lean, rich.
7 disks might blue a pipe, but I would expect it take longer than that. Would cam timing being retarded & VERY easy ( as reported) starting fit together? Some of theses engine mechanics here can surely answer this one. It sure isn't a question for someone like me,,,OHH but someday,,

I've decided to do an engine teardown (at least as far as pulling the head and checking the valves). I want to see what's going on in there, check cam chain/timing, etc. and then do a carb cleaning and rejet before I put the bike on the road.  I bought this bike as a project anyway, so I might as well have at it! Today I will be prepping the patient and preparing the operating room.
Any suggestions as far as the teardown and rebuild will be welcomed, especially recommendations about parts I should replace.
Thanks for all the help so far. I'll keep you posted!

I, for one, have no clue about posting pictures. I do, however, really enjo & appreciate the ones that get put up. For sure some of those schematics & stuff with the red lines pointing out the part in question. Anyway, I hope you can post pics as you do the stuff you are gonna do. Either way, have fun at it, You did buy it as a project!
