Title: VL 800 seat
Post by john1652 on 01/02/07 at 18:01:48

??? ??? ??? ??? ??? ??? ??? ??? ??? ??? ??? ??? ??? ??? ???  I
I am going to try a VL 800 seat on the savage. It doesn't look like it would take a lot of fabrication to make it work. It's big and wide and looks pretty comfy. Was wondering if anyone had tried that seat conversion yet. I think it will make a fab. solo seat.    john

Someone (a lady I believe) here or over at the "Be_Savage" yahoo group, has done this mod ... and with some success if my memory serves me correctly ...

HI JOHN

I RE-FABED A HARLEY SOFT TAIL (FRONT AND REAR)  FOR MINE...THAT STOCK SEAT WAS NOT KIND TO MY MATCHING BODY PARTS AND MY WIFE DIDN'T LIKE HERS EITHER. THE REAR SEAT JUST BOLTED RIGHT UP... THE FRONT WAS A ENTIRELY DIFFERENT MATTER.  IT REQUIRED DIMANTALING AND A LITTLE CONTACT WITH A JIG SAW,  AND RE DOING THE MOUNTING BRACKETS.  IT LOOKS GOOD THOUGH AND THE SIDE FLAPS ON THE HARLEY SEAT HIDE THE MOUNTING BRACKETS AND LOOK GOOD.   MY SAVAGE SEAT IS WIDER THAN MY SEAT NOW, BUT I CAN'T  SAY THE SAME FOR THE WIFES BUT THERE CLOSER NOW.
HAVE A BLESSED DAY

What if after doing all that work the seat is completely uncomfortable? ???
There are a few guys on this site who have used the HD "sporty" seat and are very happy with it. Check it out, before lighting the welding torch. ;D

i'm hoping that i can take mounting thingie off an old savage seat and put them on the vl800 seat, but it does have a small piece of metal extending from the rear that hopefully will alow me to just bolt it down to the fender. It also has a tab in front like ours does. man it could look awsome or perhaps crappy i'll let ya know.   john ;D

I have some photos of the mock up but i can't seem to be able to put em on this thread. tell me again how i get them from "my pictures" on my computer to this thread please.      john

The board resizes all the pics to 400x400 or so. So smaller pictures and really large pictures are resized and pixelize.

If you save images to your desktop you can see them in actual size.

I like the seat, though it IS Big!

The cool thing about customizing a bike or anything is that iit allows us to take something we bought & change it to what we want it to be, or do. If you want a big seat to be comfortable, heck, go for it. What could be more sensible than making it comfortable?

Title: Re: VL 800 seat
Post by john1652 on 01/06/07 at 12:18:47

alright it is official it's staying . that seat is so comfy i can't describe it. i sit up about an inch or so which is great for my long legs. i sit straighter better for my broken neck and it is so wide it just feels great. and what an easy install. put the tab in the slot already on our bikes, drill 2 holes in the fender install two bolts and nuts on back mounting bracket and ta-da it is finished total time 7.3 minutes man i recomend this seat to anyone. as far as the ugly goes i just bought a duce back rest and luggage rack for a harley on e=bay and it should cover the ugly up. but if ya want to go with a pillion that would work also, but with the pillion there is always a chance somebody is a gonna wanna ride with ya. not good.  see ya   john

Hmmm...if you can get the stock VL800 seat to work..you could probably get the VL800 Mustang seat to work?  Now THAT'S comfort.
