just got 97 savage 8800 miles showroom condition thanks to forum had dealer replace oil plug cap wondering if upping enrichment really does anything for backfiring

Congrats on the new bike!

There are several posts here, but generally the bikes are set extremely lean from the factory, so unless previous owners have re-jetted the bike, it will backfire a fair bit.  Plus, different exhausts will affect the leanness as well.

Oh - you might want to see if the tires are original, because they may have decent tread, but likely will crack with the age.  My 2000 had original tires that looked great, but went flat fairly soon.

Congrats on your new ride.

There is lots of info in this forum about backfiring. As I have pointed out before, for me with what I felt was just standard adjustments (no new jets or spacer adjustments) I was able to remove backfiring under almost every condition. I did get a couple of backfires in about 5,000 miles of commuting, but nothing regular and nothing I could repeat upon demand. I also averaged over 50 MPG under all conditions. Mine was a 2004 so there are some differences.
