Title: savage in phoenix Post by tbalam on 12/27/06 at 18:12:39 OK guys here is my problem, I live just outside of phoenix, az elevation 1200 ft, average temp 80-100 F. I have main jets ranging from 140-152.5, jardine muffler, and stock pilot. right now i have a 142.5 main in and it runs fine at the top end, but not great. i have 1/2 ish white spacer in for DEQ. what would you guys recommend for the main jet? when i had a 150 in it was way to rich, but i recently cleaned the carb out as it had been sitting for a while, I think the air circuits were clogged. Oh and stock air filter. |
Title: Re: savage in phoenix Post by azjay on 12/28/06 at 08:00:24 we're in yuma, i ran a #55 pilot jet, #155 & 2/3 spacer in the summer and a #152.5 & 1/2 spacer in the winter. our air filter is stock, the air box door swiss cheesed and a 19" straight thru dyna muffler on the other end. it ran just a little rich in either case, which i prefer in my air cooled motors, especially for the 6mos that we're over 100* daily. with that jardine on the exhaust, you need to open up the intake air flow in some fashion, K&N cone filter, pull the air horn or swiss cheese the air box door, any one will work. i swiss cheesed because i moved the regulator and extra wiring into the air horn area when i put the sportster seat on, so that space wasn't going to flow well anyway. |
Title: Re: savage in phoenix Post by tbalam on 12/28/06 at 08:20:56 thanks, i'll try it what size k&n cone works best, i've measured and i have about 4 inches in length an 3 inches in height where the old carb to airbox rubber is. or did you cut th air box and put the battery in there and then get a bigger cone? |
Title: Re: savage in phoenix Post by serowbot on 12/28/06 at 09:44:28 I'm in Tucson at 2400ft and like to ride in the mountains(4000ft to 9000ft). I run a 150 main/50 pilot with #4 (2/3) spacer. You should be jetted a bit richer than me at 1200ft. |
Title: Re: savage in phoenix Post by tbalam on 12/28/06 at 17:23:44 i tried a 150 after cleaning the carb and the darn thing nearly kicked me off!!! it was great i am going to try the 152.5 in the near future. if you're running a 50 pilot, are you to rich with the 52.5? mine is only a 1/2 to 3/4 turns out at optimum, and i only get about 1/2 to 3/4 turn more before the idle drops. should i get a 50? thanks for the help |
Title: Re: savage in phoenix Post by serowbot on 12/29/06 at 09:44:22 That's why I went to the #50. I can go full closed on the idle mix and it still runs, best with the #50 is about 1 to 1 1/2 out, 2+ and it starts to stumble. There are small fuel passages that pull direct from the floatbowl and are not cut off by the idle mix screw, these are apparently enough to allow my bike to idle. The mix screw just adds more richness to this. When I went to the #50 I got a good boost to mpg's with no detriment to performance. Also less low speed deceleration backfire in the mountains. If your getting any black soot from the exhuast with the #52 go ahead and try a #50. It's easy enough to change back. Serowbot |
