Title: Griptastic
Post by govmule84 on 12/21/06 at 12:10:45

Ok.
I want some of those nifty as heck chrome grips.  What do I need to buy?  Some folks are telling me anything for a 7/8" bar, some are telling me they have to be fit to the model.  Any thoughts?

How do the old ones come off?  Do I need to disassemble the on/off switch housing to get at the throttle side grip?

Any help is appreciated.

Check your bar size, the newer models have 1" dia.  Mine is a '96 and it's 1"

The chrome bar ends are plastic and are just pushed on, should pull right off.

The clutch side is glued on, if you're lucky it will come off fairly easly.  For me, insert small phillips screwdriver between the grip and bar where it looks a little loose.  Spin the screwdriver so that it peels the grip from the bar and work it further into the bar.  Insert 2 more screwdrivers equally spaced around the bar.  Grab the grip as a whole and twist it off.

Throttle side is removed with the control, split the control, disengage the cable, done.  Just take a good look at everything before you remove it so you know how it goes back together.

All the bars are 1" unless they have been changed. The rubber can be cut off if you have no intentions of putting them back.
