Title: Goodbye and Thank you
Post by magicfairy on 11/28/06 at 11:09:48

Well after about 18 months with my S40 I have traded it in for a brand new S50. I am doing longer rides, live in a very Windy city and fell in love with the silver one. I wanted that bit more power and weight.  Got a great deal on the Trade-In

But the Savage was a fantastic starter bike, helped me gain confidence, was light and easy to manouvre and I know I will miss it.

A big thanks to everyone on this site that anwered my questions and helped me with rejetting etc.

This is still the best bike site I have come across.

Marie

At least you got another Suzuki ;D
If you get a chance write down for us a list of likes & dislikes between the 2 models, ride on!

You say yes, I say no
You say stop and I say go, go, go
Oh, no
You say goodbye and I say hello
Hello, hello
I don't know why you say goodbye
I say hello
Hello, hello
I don't know why you say goodbye
I say hello

I say high, you say low
You say why, and I say I don't know
Oh, no
You say goodbye and I say hello
Hello, hello (Hello Goodbye Hello Goodbye)
I don't know why you say goodbye
I say hello
Hello, hello
I don't know why you say goodbye
I say hello

Why, why, why, why, why, why
Do you say good bye
Goodbye, bye, bye, bye, bye

Hela, heba helloa
Hela, heba helloa...

It's a good site because of people like you who stick around to answer the dumb questions.  As a former S40 / current S50 rider you can objectively answer the questions as to the differences between the two and which is 'better' for what type of riding.

In other words, there is no reason for you to leave.

Didn't expect 'em to be but I've heard others speak well of 'em.

You are right, there was so much I loved about my S40 that I went for the S50 cos it was so similar. Seat height, looks, placment of controls, Suzuki reliability.

I went for the S50 to add to the list, more power and weight, tripmeter and I love V Twins, and the build quality is better (which you would expect as it is a lot more pricey) Heaps more chrome to clean :-(

Power delivery is quite different, not as smooth as a belt but I like the idea of a no maintenance shaft drive, I was lubing my drive belt quite a lot. Also the suspension on S50 seems better, not as bumpy.

Early days at the moment but I must admit I am loving riding S50.

My parter has a Hayabusa and a BMW GS 1150 Adventure and we do a lot of touring. Savage always felt like it was struggling a bit to keep up.

And hey - there is nothing nicer than getting a shiny new bike with 0ks on the clock. Whatever the make and model.

Enjoy.  And good luck with the new bike.

Magicfairy,
Have you ridden a heavier bike before?  I have not and am interested in how the heavier weight affects your riding.  Did it take long to get used to?  Do you feel like you are wrestling a steer? :P   Thanks for any input.

I was a bit worried about the weight but the S50 is only 40 kg heavier than S40. I notice it a bit moving it around - having to push / pull with a bit more force but once riding it is pretty similar. The ride position is so similar, and the S50 is the same height from the ground as the S40, I think that helped a lot.

What I did notice is that I don't get blown around as much in the wind. It is so windy here in Wellington that people get blown right off their bikes, sometimes roads are closed to motorbikes. We are expecting 130k gusts later today in exposed places.

Yes, we would all be interested in an occasional update on the differences between the bikes.

I've got both at home, Savage and Intruder 800 versions. You will miss the Savage, guaranteed. Even stone stock, it would hand my wife's Intruder its tail light.

You will need to completely remove and lubricate the shaft once a year. Both ends are splined and require grease. So do the swingarm pivots (just like a Savage). The rear drive unit requires gear oil, which must be changed every other year.

Changing Intruder/S50 air filters is a nightmare, you have to pull the seat (which mean both sidepanels as well), the tank, and hope your fingers are small enough to fit in there, because pliers won't.

Keep a close watch on your battery, that model is notorious for shaking the inner plates loose and the cable end bolts out (bad placement between the rear wheel and transmission).

The gas valves (even the current ones) tend to leak.

Minor annoyances at best.

Oh, IntruderAlert is geared more for techies (and the backroom for dirty old men).

My buddy just spent over $1,000 to have his shaft drive rebuilt on his BMW. Ive been looking at the S50 also. It has the same drawback as the S40 tho, small tank. Bigger motor, same tank size. Makes no sense.

wow! what does that convert to in mph? i thought we had wind in in the desert south west, bigger/heavier is certainly better in your neighborhood. enjoy the new bike, ride safe.

about 80mph - be hard to keep the rubber side down!

Thanks for the info.
You are right I will miss the Savage, I had a good run on it, never even dropped it but I can't afford to keep 2 bikes unfortunately.
Yep riding in that wind is horrible, suddenly finding yourself in another lane makes the ride to work "interesting"
Here is a sample from todays news
"Wild wind and rain lashing the lower North Island overnight saw four roofs ripped off houses in the Wellington region.

However, with winds reaching gale force, Mr Dunbar said they were expecting a lot more damage"

Apparently Wellington (New Zealand) is the windiest capital city in the world.
A friend of had her Hyosung 250 blown right off the road on Sunday on a local notoriously dangerous hill pass on Sunday. She is OK though.
