Title: What I don't like about my Savage
Post by geo on 11/23/06 at 23:14:19

I'll itemize the "cons" first: :(
1. I hate the speedometer: its location, its squeeks, its not having an odometer, its not having a tachometer. I wish they had a single instrument mounting in the handlebars that would correct all these shortcomings.
2.I hate the license plate assembly hanging down below that beautiful bobber rear fender. I relocated the plate up on the sissy bar, then removed and stored the mounting bracket and light in a box. I know the plate is not lighted, but I don't care, I don't use the bike at night.
3. I hate not having a fuel-off position at the petkock.
4. I hate the location of ignition key. It should be up front.
5. The seat hurts my butt after about 15 miles. So I get off the thing every 15 miles. Not a big problem for me.

Stuff I fixed: ;D
1. The darn backfireing problem. I fixed it by going to a SuperTrapp slip on muffler and a carb rejetting. It still backfires but with a ka-pop after some shifts. It sounds more ferocious. I also installed a K&N air filter. This filter has increased mid to upper speed power.

Stuff I like: :D
1. The fenders are beautiful, much nicer than the Sportster. The front fender fits tightly to the tire. My bike is black so it looks like there is no fender.
2. The fuel tank.
3. The belt drive. Gone are the chain-oil stripes on the back of my jacket.
4. Light weight. No more fighting with the pigs weight.
5. My handlebars. My 2002 handlebars fit perfectly.
6. The booming acceleration. With the breathing mods I have made, the bike has scary acceleration.
7. Low seat height, I'm 5' 8" tall.

Stuff I wondered about: ???
1. I've always wondered if there would be a significant handeling improvement by reducing the front rake by, say, a 3" wheelbase reduction.

Some of the guys who have done a ton of mods are using longer shocks. Since you are tall, ( I am 5'6", YES you are TALL! ;D) You could get away with a pretty tall shock. I THink they were saying that raising the rear of the bike affected the handling of the front end as well as the rear being more stable. I can see how it might steer quicker. Hope I am not hallucinating again. Also, the oil change for the front forks is a handling upgrade I intend to be doing as soon as I get the exhaust & carbs stuff all lined out.

For the items you dont like are several solutions/improvements.
1) Install a bicycle computer in the middle of the handlebar. Relocate the indicatorlights on the upper triple tree.
2) You could fix the license plate to the LH side.
3) The petcock is "OFF" when the engine is not running
4) ? I don't bother
5) Fit the sporty seat ( Best investment I made)

Be sure and read all the details on the longer shocks - there are a couple of draw backs - there are also some roughly stock length progressives that improve the bike as well.

All in all, its small things you dont like on your bike, easy to fix  :)

The speedometer issue is easy to combine with the tank issue (I dont like the small tank), bigger tank and the speedometer up front  8) Thats how im gonna do it when i get the time to do the thing
