Title: 100 W headlight bulb?
Post by Martin on 11/21/06 at 10:47:13

What will happen if you put an 80/100 W H4 xenon headlight bulb -- like the one below -- onto a stock Savage?

Thank you,

Martin

Depending on your local, a ticket.
Low beam is limited to 55watts in Calif.

Whyfor do you want such a bright light?

When running on lonely roads at night you can use bright headlights to light up the road -- so that you are not overdriving your lights at 70 mph.  Under streetlights, in traffic, the only thing you will accomplish with a too bright headlight is annoy others.   Annoying others can be hazardous to your health.

When I had my four 100 watt Lucas Square-Eight driving lights on my rallye sedan I would shut them off whenever another vehicle was within a half mile in front of me, so as to not blind them.

If I wanted more light for use on lonely roads at night I would install a light bar with a 100 watt pencil beam on a separate switch.

IMHO, upgrading a headlight on a Savage will not tick off motorists.  Reason?  Most cars today use 4 headlight systems.  Meaning?  When they are on dim, us bikers have 110 watts of light coming at us vs. our 55 watts going out at them.  Translation?  I'm just as entitled to see the road as they are, and if I can put an 80 watt bulb in with no ill effects to my bike, then so be it.  The oncoming motorist will still have less light to deal with than I do coming from his vehicle.

When you live way out in the country and ride at night, light is your friend.  :)  No sense forking over tons of money in light bars/lights when you can put a higher power bulb in the bucket.  That is, unless you just want to spend that money, then by all means -- knock yourself out!

For me it seems to be direction.  As even with the 55/60 bulb, the high beam really lights up the road.  So I think it's a problem with the lense or maybe the bulbs position in the reflector.  I don't know which filament lights for high beam, but one has a shield to focus the light up or down. also one filament is further out.  Maybe a few spacers under the bulb would yield a higher beam.  Something I got to check into.

Do not stand still for an extended period of time:

No cooling : your headlight bucket ( plastic) will melt

i instaled the 55/60 watt xenon, world of difference over stock, also mounted two 20watt halogen bullets to the  forks, they are tyed into the low beam via a realy and own fused circuit to the battery, really opens up the width of the beam spread..

I run a 90/100 in my stock headlight. No melting and battery stays charged.

I too have the Xenon headlamp on my bike, and it makes a helluva difference vs. the stock lamp.  Also, double check your alignment of the headlamp.  You can have a good light, but if your alignment is off you won't see 20 feet in front of you.

Do all 55/60 watt xenon bulbs have a universal fit into the Savage's bulb socket? or is there a spacific part number to a properly fitting bulb?

It's a direct replacement bulb, no adaptor needed. Just has to be an H4 type bulb.
