Title: Help, muffler question
Post by barry68v10 on 11/10/06 at 06:35:04

Hey all, I'm considering buying a new gsxr600 muffler and "engineering" a way to put it on my savage.  It's light, looks sharp (titanium) and will certainly flow plenty for the LS650.  Is this a waste of time and $?  What thinks you? :-/

Oh, I forgot to mention, I can get it for $20, which is the only reason I'm considering it.

Like the Nike commercials says " Just do it!" Great things come from experimentation. You got the exhaust for a measly $20 bucks, so why the hell not? Who knows, you may have the baddest exhaust around when you're done. Be sure to send pics.

Absolutely, innovation is the Way of the Savage.

Pics are good - so are *.mp3 or *.wav files of the sound.  GOFORIT!

Definitely go for it.  If you can make a wav or mp3 recording. please email it to me and i'll add it to the post in the Tech Ref forum.  Good luck!

That's why I like mine so much.....if I screw up, I know where and it's usually inexpensive to recover!  ;D

I got my fishtail for $20 delivered.  It's in the garage as it was a bit too loud.  However it got the wife to agree to paying retail on a MAC.   ;D

I don't have a way to record sound, anyone live in the Baltimore/Washington D.C. area that could help with that.   ;D

Got the gxsr muffler today for $20 as promised ;D
Now I have an interesting dilemma, the inlet is 2 1/8 inches and apparently bolts to a flange.  I'm wondering if I should take it to a muffler shop and have them fab something up to go to a 1 5/8 or 1 3/4 inch pipe.
Thoughts?

That would be your best bet to have something that works properly and looks like it is supposed to be there.

I measured the gxsr600 muffler for fitment.  WOW!  That thing looks huge compared to the stock pipe.  I'm quite sure it will flow 4X what the stock muffler will, but that really seems like overkill.  That thing is 22" long and 5 1/4" in diameter!  It will take a 2 1/2" input pipe.  I think it will be quiet (I don't want loud), but I'm not sure it will provide enough backpressure to keep my bike from being tempermental tuning-wise.  I have to admit tho, for all it's size, that can barely weighs anything and looks sharp!  Also, the mounting bracket is quite a way back from the stock location.  Looks like the perfect mouning point is to the passenger footpeg bracket.  I'll keep you posted.

One more question, would it be better to have 1 5/8 to hook to the header pipe or 1 3/4?  I know folks around here have used both...

If youuse the passenger foot peg bracket on a Savage you will have to use a hinge in the connection as it goes up and down with the swing arm :) Max

Good point, Max.  Yep, I don't want to do that!  I may have to shorten the exhaust header.

Oh, my mistake.  I didn't notice how far back the stock muffler actually mounted.  Ok, no problem! ;D

I extended my OE bracket with some 3/8 flat stock, drilled for the OE holes and then used a large sainless hose clamp to hold the muffler tight to that. It could have also been drilled for the HD sliding bolt I guess, but the heat shield is held on with a hose clamp so I just used it. Max
