Title: Backfiring - I need help!!
Post by cjreid on 09/26/06 at 15:13:49

I've had my Savage for almost a year and I love it.  But... this last Sunday I took it for a ride (about 85 miles one way). On the way up it ran perfectly.  I was with a group, we ate, then headed back.  About 5 minutes into the ride home, my bike began backfiring like crazy.  It sounded like you lit an entire string of fire crackers.  It began loosing power.  The engine continued to run but it felt like the wheels were only "grabbing" spuratically.  I usually use premium gas (and I did Sunday as well) but I stopped and refilled with more premium (just in case). I rode it for another 20 miles but it continued to backfire like a string of firecrackers.  I  then parked it and went back for it with a trailor.  I couldn't think of anything that would "go bad" that fast!  Any ideas?

All sorts of stuff!

question 1)  Any carb or exhasut mods?
question 2)  Did you check your plug?

edit:  and by this I mean, see if it's fouled, could be caused by sudden float mechanism and seat failur, petc0ck failuree... then check to see that it's sparking.
question 3) (not a question)  Don't use premium gas, use the lowest grade that doesn't cause "pinging."  edit 2:  The stuff I use is not much better thtn pee after a good night of drinking! ::)
question 4)  Did you check for exhaust leaks?

I'm sure others will chime in...

oh, here's a tip, backfiring is a common problem, so some folks don't reply, or reply snidley and tersely (Usually not a problem...) so put "NEW" or "SUDDEN" in the title.

You didn't mention how many miles on her.
Could be a number of things.
Bad gas?
Bad plug or wire?
Rectifier?
Could be mechanical, Cam chain?
I would start with the fuel system.
Then the electrical stuff.
Then (unless it's obvious, do it first) mechanical.

Check that your petc0ck's vacuum line has no fuel in it.  If there's fuel in it, the vacuum diaphram is leaking gas into the mix.
Also check that your float isn't stuck.
best of luck,

snidley:  quit your whining and go out and buy a new bike.   :o

tersely: we've talked about this over and over again, do a search dam it.  ;D

or just do the steps listed in the above posts.

enjoy

c'mon now, Sluggo, I know you are a moderator so have to keep site tidy, but please - this is the first entry for this guy - what do you want to do with, in your own words "snidely" & "tersely" - put the guy off the bike & looking @ this site lest he feels we are elitist? (I'd really like to think all you typed was all in jest but...)

not trying to start a feud here but I'm new to site & bike (bought in May & got on site then) & appreciate that searching for some items is a real pain on any site, including this. Any help (mainly from you old Savage hands) you can give others, such as the other people replying here with constructive help, rather than one liners, is what makes this so special to us all.

thanks, george 8)

What condition is your bike in and what kind of mods have you done?? What kinds of PM do you do for the bike?? You will have to elaborate concerning what you do to keep the bike running and what mods you have performed. We need background. Without that "act of God" comes to mind.

I did the mods on this bike for her,  air pod filter, sportser muffler. I did these about 8 months ago. It was running fine, my guess being she lives too far for me to take a look would be fuel or vacume.

age and  mileage??last valve adjustment??
my few guesses:
clogged fuel screen in petc0ck
timing chain or tensioner
BAD gas
fouled plug
air mix screw worked loose
loose plug /wire
bad connection @ cdi/bad cdi
dirty air cleaner
good luck!! let us (sluggo too!!rofl)know what you find we all FEED off each other..geez ..george lighten up..;D

Don't worry, Sluggo. I got your joke and chuckled when I saw it because I knew you were just responding "tongue in cheek" to vroom's posting.  :)

Don't forget a bad or low battery will cause those same symptoms.

or a loose battery connection, actually any other critical connection that has vibrated loose.  If you think it is fuel related, I continue to be amazed by what a cople of oz. of SeaFoam does. I have seen a 5+mpg increase since running an ounce a  couple times. Must have had some slightly plugged air bleeds in the carb that the stuff opened up. Also claims to be a winter fuel stablizer. a few days ago I had reason to take off my exaust pipe, after replacing it without replacing the header gasket it started backfiring like crazy, also I niticed the copper shim that goes around the header muffler joint was laying on my garage floor ,so that joint is not tight eather, I assume that is the backfiring problem ,on my bike anyway.

OK guys - thanks for your help.  As to the snide and terse comments - that's ok, I can take it.

But here's the facts:
  1) I know Savages backfire periodically - but they're not supposed to backfire at the rate of 10 times per minute!
  2) I was baffeled because it started so suddenly and was so profuse.
  3) I did a search of this site before I posted my question - the articles I found didn't mention the sudden onset or profussion of backfiring.
  4) My Savage is a 2002, has about 4,500 miles on it, and the only modifications were done by jrm8486 - so it's what he said  ::)

Check for a small exhaust leak. Maybe a small crack that is barely visible. Check you carb mounting clamps and rubbers to make sure everything is tight and you have no intake leaks. Check for gas in the vacuum line for your petc0ck.

Ho, ho Enfield-fan! (seriously  'twas funny!)

(you must have a sense of humor liking Enfields - they did not have the greatest reputation when they were - still - made in England!)

just kidding on last bit, Enfield-fan - hopefully proving I do have sense of humor too, Sluggo.

however, I obviously have trouble sometimes understanding other's humor (thanks to thumperclone for e-mail for some explanation there), though after hanging around enough (too many?) dumpsters in my time thought I'd have no trouble in that dept!

;D

HERE IS THE SOLUTION!!!!   :D

I bought the manual and did the things you guys suggested - then....

I took it to a repair shop.  It took them two hours (which cost me $120.00) but the problem turned out to be a loose connection to the stater (spelling?).

Just thought I'd let you know so you can add it to your list of things causing backfiring.

Thanks again for your help. :-*   CJ

Do you know where the connection was located?

I thought the Lettuce was the only Savage not to backfire until Sunday.  Came to a stop outside the church, tried to raise it up the kerb to the sidewalk to park and spun the rear wheel a bit.  Once over the kerb stopped and hit the kill switch. then BAAANG!!! The biggest backfire ever.  It was like a small bomb going off. Then blessed silence.  An hour or so later started up without a hitch.

BTW Sluggo - you sure you're not English?  That "ironic" humour was bitingly sarcastic enough to have come from this side of the pond.  I wasn't sure which way to read it till the clarification posts.  Ouch!.

For newer posters it is useful to state that they've done the searches but not come up with anything that tackles their specific question.  Being a learning community is to everyone's benefit.  Anyone care to enlighten me as to what the stator is and does.  I remember in Ted Simon's classic round the world on a Triumph odessy, Jupiter's Travels he has trouble at one point with the stator.  I read that nearly 30 years ago and I didn't know what it was then and I'm still as clueless now.

gens the juice she runs on - alternator more or less

Stator looks like this, its under the left crankcase cover. (number 1 on this pic)
http://houseofmotorcycles.bikebandit.com/partsbandit/assets/schematics/Suzuki/SU0145_021.gif
The windings on the stationary part (stator) are inside of the moving magnets in the flywheel (rotor).

A typical auto alternator has the rotor with magnets on the inside and the windings (stator) on the outside.
