Title: Well it's finally over
Post by steelwolf on 09/24/06 at 17:16:39

I finally got around to fixing that d@mn oil leak. The whole process was pretty simple but trying to find TDCC was a little tricky. Especially the last "C". While I was at it I also adjusted the valves and put on a new fender. Yea I know, I just did the "bob" and now a new fender. I ride my bike everyday and to be quite honest I just got tired of getting my @ss, my back and, my entire bike covered in road grime and mud every time it rains. I love the look but it must be put on reserve till the purchase of another "daily rider". Anyhow, I bought a rear fender off of a HD Softail and mounted it. It looks a little funny at the moment but I think with the purchase and installation of a set of ape hangers, and a Sportster seat I think it will balance the look of the bike. Give it a look-see.

The oil leak was the "plug leak". Ya know, the bad gene in the Savage's DNA.

did you replace any washers/seals besides the one causing the leak - I'm putting off doing mine but it is getting worse (yeah, I know proscrastinating is not the way to fix things, but...

if you did replace anything, do you have part #'s for all parts you swapped out? be a real help.

incidently -way to generous with the "bad gene" phrase - I say it is a design fault they should have fixed in the intervening years between the Savage's first appearnce & its resurrection.

To think so many suffer(ed) from it really ticks me off - but for this site I would be thinking I was facing a gasket leak/blowing.

bike looks nice

I like it! But I would drop the rear by an inch...

George, I just replaced the plug. As so many here have already I would highly recommend some sealer on the head cover and the plug. The job really isn't as bad as it seems. I would compare it to changing valve cover gaskets on a V8 van. As long as you take the time to remove everything that is in the way. One thing I would point out that I don't remember seeing on any of the other posts is that the engine mounting brackets needed to come off of the frame for me to get the head cover off. If it was mentioned forgive me. I just kinda breezed through Vroom's "how to" (very good job BTW)and then just glanced at the Clymer a time or two for fun.  ;D

In the pic the shocks are all the way up. I had them set that way to keep the bob'd fender from hitting the belt. I have since set them back to all the way down where they ride better.

I just mounted a harley fender, only to the swing arm so it would hug the tire...screwed up on the first two sissy bars, hope third times the charm. Also changing over to bullet lites and old style spring mounted solo seat.Kinda got in over my head while engine apart for valve job. ::)Hoping to still make it to biketober fest to hook up with Ed L.

I wish you luck with the sissy bar. I started to mount mine to the swingarm as well but I wasn't sure how I would like having to deal with it everytime I needed to take off the rear wheel. The side mounted license plate is a big enough hassle. :-/

Going to use the shock mount and have the bar lean almost same rake as fork....mostly aestheyic and to occasionally carry a pack..was trying to spring mount a solo seat, but not working out very well
