Title: 650ls is AMAZING! No-power problem solved!! (pics)
Post by Stimpy on 09/11/06 at 20:02:40

Hey! Remember my "overheating" problem a few months back?

...Well, itīs fixed and it was NOT what we all thought it was.

We were all focusing the overheating and no passing power (top speed 60mph) on the carb, spark plug, timing and/or exhaust system but it turns out it was MUCH WORSE than that.

BASICALLY some idiot (Iīm the 3rd owner) assembled the oil pump wrong somehow last time he opened the clutch cover for some reason and it seems it had been working poorly lately.

What happened after that is that the whole valve system stop getting lubricated correctly and it mearly "survived" on oil splashing up from the crank case but after that it was metal against metal for 100īs of miles!

The push rod got almost round. (see pics)
The rocker arms got shaved good a couple of milimiters.
The timing chain steached to its limit and got wobbly.
The chainīs autoadjuster was just about to give way.
The chainīs guides got all chipped away.
Amazingly the valves were fine and just needed ajudsting.

After the repair the bike went from the equivalent of a 125cc to a 600cc!!! I had no idea.

Now it goes 0-60 in 3 seconds flat and reaches about 95mph on a staight line, crazy.

The repair costs and parts totaled about $500USD+ but well worth it.

PIC 1   All the parts that were replaced.

PIC 2    Can you see the damage?!

Hope this helps someone.

Iīll take pics of my bike "Nasty" soon (juat a black 97ī, mostly stock except for the jet kit, exhaust, extra horn and a halogen bulb, skid/engine plate soon) and post them here but I need to give it a good wash and find a nice location first  ;D

Thanks Guys!
Richard P.

Amazing- we all know that friction is a major source of heat- but your situation is just amazing.  Glad to hear your back in motion.

If you don't have one already - might be a real good idea to order in a magnetic drain plug - your liable to have some bits of metal floating around

The closeup of the rocker/cam is amazingly telling.
The Savage engine is quite machine.  With all of that going on and it was still running.

Almost hate to ask this question. Did you clean the oil pump pickup strainer or did you get the engine that far apart. If not did you backflush it at least to insure the oil pump inlet isn't restricted. If it is you may get to do the jpb over.  ?http://suzukisavage.com/bbs/YaBBImages/huh.gif??

...oil pump strainer? (page 117 manual)

Iīm pretty sure I did, it had some tiny shavings stuck to it (the pump itself was not working properly for a long time) but I think most of metal were tinytiny scraps floting in the oil itself.

That magnetic drainplug sounds like a good idea but what about the aluminum shavings, where can one order one anyway?

I think I have no choice but to change the oil a couple of more times (hot, not warm) every 100 miles then 300 or so.

Yeah, that savage motor is amazing; the bike was in this condition for at least 1,000 miles (that I drove) and before that who knows. It always started on the first try, drove it 2-3 times a week and had decent power too, all things considered.

Eventually it lost power and the valves sounded like an old school trolling outboard motor. Clink, clink, clink. It was time to go to the ER.

http://www.magneticdrainplug.com/

is where I got mine.  After my top cylinder rebuild, it caught alot of loose metal.  Im thinking anything alum will be picked up by the oil filter itself.  U might want to consider changing your oil and filter after 400-600 miles (using a magnetic plug as well) to get some of that crap out before going long distances between oil changes.  Couldnt hurt thats for sure.

Now it goes 0-60 in 3 seconds flat .  haha UH HUH! rite

Yeah, ok, maybe not 3 seconds but that is what it feels like to me.

It must be around 6 or 7 seconds i guess, hard to tell, never timed it, never will.

 ;D

Thanx, plug ordered.
