I'm a Newbie to this site and to the Savage. Bought a 2001 savage with 5,242mi. already at gone 700 miles :D
I done an Oil change W/ filter, ordered Stock style K&N, Drilled out Air fuel Plug (currently 3 out)(stock was set at 2 1/2 out, Replaced the infamous head bolt Plug, and dielectric greased every connector i could find.

Q. I've tinkered with the air/fuel screw originally set at 2 1/2 brought it to 3 out got rid of most of the backfire issue (no more poof at shutdown) and decel-ing. But now i get more vibration. am i running to rich? I know I haven't done the white spacer mod but will be getting to that shortly. should they be done together? plz help - Scott-

depending on your riding you should do the white spacer mod, rejet the pilot and main jet. A more free flowing exhaust is also essential. I would add an irdium plug. When you add a K&N filter and do nothing for the fuel, exhaust and spark, you will be very lean. Not a good condition for a thumpers long life. BTW, Its best to do all the mods at once then tweak you mixture screw. Good luck and plaese ask more questions and posy your results. One last thing, backfires on upshifts usually mean a air leak at the intake or exhaust. Happy wrenching.

Thanks for the reply brewbrother. Vibration was a loose engine mount on the top of the engine. Just got to do the spacer mod and exhuast . Should'of done that spacer when i had the tank off. ???

K&n came in today put it in. my old filter was nasty. took it out for a decent ride and now there is and exhuast leak at the header, Probably happened from when i had the Stealership(Small MC shop) fix the plug leak before i bought the bike from them. Just took 700 Mi to make a noise.

Q. Is the rear pulley suppose to be able to wiggle? it has bushings in there right? I wiggled it up and down left and right and it moves! Is there a was to tighten this up a bit.
