Title: how slow can you go?
Post by sluggo on 08/31/06 at 16:39:35

any fool can ride fast, that takes little skill at all. a better test of skill is how slow can you go. how long can you balance on pegs at stop light. take it over to a parking lot and practice your slow speed manuvering. get that down pat, and you conquered the hardest part of riding.

Good point sluggo! I don't consider myself an "accomplished" Rider by any means ... but I can occasionally come to a complete stop and balance without putting my feet down before making a right hand turn!!

I'm always trying that. Someday I want to stop for a full minute, feet up & go. Just to baffle the cager behind me. ;D I'm OK for a few seconds, then gotta put the boot down.

at a stop sign or red light got to put a boot down or you can get a ticket for failing to stop..

Yeah but the cop behind you will still be wondering how you did that as you thumped off, he'll forget to pull you!

True! Happened to a friend of mine in High School. After that, if we we're out cruising in the car & came to that stop sign, we all opened the doors & put out feet on the street before proceeding. Just for laughs. I may have told this before, can't remember, gettin' old. :P

My husband and I just took an "Experienced rider course".  Most of the time was spent on slow speed drills.

Thinking back over the decades....   two drops over 5 mph.  No count on the less than 5 mph drops -- broke a collar bone on one!  Yep.  Need to practice low speed more.

I won the beer keg push on my Savage. You have to go slow or the keg will cross the line and you get disqualified.  Feet touch the ground, you get disqualified. I got the keg across the finish line, put a boot down, and fell over. I was tired. It's a LOT of work to hold one upright slow.

For fun, I tried balancing my v-twin at no speed. Uh uh, ain't happening. Having a 500+ pound bike fall over on you is no fun.

No question about it, slow speed movements are much tougher.  One of the most difficult times I have had riding was passing the motorcycle riding test in Arizona.  I had a ton of riding experience, but I made the mistake of taking my CX500 to the test.  They had the cones set up in a small area that was surrounded by chain-link fence.  The fenced in area was only slightly bigger than the size needed for the cones.  This meant that you could never build up any speed for the manuevers.  Luckily the tester allowed me to practice a few times and then was very patient with me during the test.  It would have been much easier on a small bike like a 125cc.

I practice this when I encounter logjams on the freeway on the ride home.  Unfortunately we don't have legal lane-splitting in Texas yet.

I practice the stop and balance and most every stop sign and light. And I agree that  slow speed handling is a lot tougher  - one of the great things about our little bike.

That Hyosung I drove the other day sure wasn't as easy.

I hit 2mph today!

Sorry, had to say that.

I've been known to fall from a bean-bag chair. Balance is not my forte. But I love my bike!

I can go from stopped in N to 1st, 2nd... w/o clutch.

figure 8s, on flat ground or on a slope, dragging pegs.

increasing or decreasing radius circels, draging pegs, but only going ccw, as right peg bent up...

not too sure on the stoping w/ feet on pegs... pretty sure I can.

...

been in Mass w/ fam.  miss my savage.  :'(

I'm impressed, the only time I've dragged a peg at low speed was when I was dragging my helmet on the asphalt  :-/. Had to replace the footpeg and helmet when I got home. Couldn't of been going more than 5mph but didn't have time to look. ;D

Try this one on for size. It's kinda big for a dial-up connection though. 17 minutes of  :o

I spent 30 minutes in the church parking lot today working on slow speed stuff.  Figure 8's and round and rounds.  Must be a handedness thing (I am right handed enough that my left hand is mostly a paperweight with an opposable thumb), but I can roll slow around to the left so nice and smooth, but the slow right turns wherein you have to lean the bike right and the rest of you left cause me nothing but grief.  Gets better all the time though.

Heh, not me.  Been ridin' for decades but probably have less than 10 hours of 2-up time.  Also no experience in group riding other than one or two friends and not organized.  Group riding is on my list of things to learn but 2-up is low priority since my wife is terrified of bikes.

Great topic!  Low speed skills are overlooked but important.  However, I have to mention two other skills that should also be practiced regularly... close quarters (those pesky figure 8's they do in the MC safety course) and evasive manuvers (aka swerving).  Don't forget to ALWAYS have an escape route in mind. (There have been a couple of times when a some dunderhead with a cell phone glued to their head "didn't see me" sitting at the red light. :o )

Ride safe and enjoy the cooler weather that's soon to come!
