Title: In the Beginning ... new front end build
Post by lancer on 08/31/06 at 12:47:32

I finally got my wheels and have enough parts to at least make it look like a front end.

The forks are Ceriani, the wheels are stock HD sportster/dyna vintage, the disc is new from an HD parts supplier, the brake caliper is from a Suzuki sportbike/Nissin part.

The fork tubes are about 6" longer than the stock units.  Fortunately, the way the triple tree & forks are mounted I can slide the tubes up and down in the trees and make the front end as short or tall as I want without affecting the travel of the forks.

I want to strip the color from the forks and have it redone with black powder coat.
I need to work out the positioning of the caliper and disc so they work together and still have clearance from the wheel.
I also need to get a new set of bearings for the steering head, this one is a different size  than the stock Savage unit.

Love the wheel

Looks like that triple clamp should really sharpen the steering, less offset. Ditto w/raising the forks. That's an upgrade I've thought about some. Let us know how it works out.

Very Cool! Can't wait to see the end result! That's a Sportster wheel ain't it? Always thought they'd look wicked on a Savage!

Forgot to mention that the forks are 40mm units, and the action of them when pressed up and down is MUCH smoother than the stock Savage forks.
I am anxcious to get this set up too, but I am thinking about tearing the bike down for a more comprehensive work.  The riding club I am in will be participating several rides this month and part of next, so I don't want to start this for about 6 weeks, but after that I think it is coming apart.

Besides the front end build/swap, I want to ...

-take the head off for more comprehensive port work
-try for larger valves if possible
-shave the head or cylinder for more compression
-reshape the exhaust a bit, more upswept in the back like the new Norton
-install a cafe racer style windshield
-and do some painting ... BLACK

So much cool stuff going on.  Unfortunately, I'm not accomplished enough to do anything similar in a timely manner.  I can figure most stuff out and get it done but it takes me longer the first several times.  Also, the Savage is my only bike.  That said, aggressive tinkering removes me from riding for too long a period.  Not that I wouldn't like to tinker and modify... I just hate not being able to ride.  For the time being, I'll have to enjoy it vicariously.  Please keep us posted with plenty of pics.

It is like that with me too, with most things.  I am a tinkerer, and as such get bogged down in the details as I play, and it takes me forever to get something done.  Especially if I have not done that particular EXACT thing before.  I go very slowly, checking everything 49 times ... it drives my wife nuts.  That is one reason I have put this off for so long, because if I worked on one part at a time I would never get to ride.  This way, by waiting to do them all together ... and with the cooler fall weather ... I think I can force myself to get through it faster and only have to dismantle and rebuild the bike once, and that is a biggie, keeping from going back and forth several times and wasting huge amounts of time.

I can't wait to see the end result. It seems like your bike is tore apart more than your riding. by the way how is the gas tank comming along. have not see anything or I missed it.

Those are very nice leading axle Cerianis. I have similar in 35mm on a couple Hercules bikes. Nice forks Lancer ;D

I've seen a few crack where the lowers clamp over the axle. Don't overtighten the four little allen heads there or yours may crack. Good find.

Nice looking. I'll be intrested in how the final product comes out.

I picked up the 40 mm Ceriani forks on an ebay auction a little over a year ago, they are NOS ... never been on a bike ... and paid $75 incl shipping.   ;D  God was smiling on me that day.

Way cool Lancer..   But think long and hard about the shaved head !!   On an over head cam engine you can get into all kinds of trouble with cam timming !!

I think it would be awesome to convert the rear to disc brake too.  That way you could have matching rims also.
Looks like alot of fun.  Good luck.

I have the rear wheel also, and will convert it after the front end is done.

As you can see, the wheels need to be blasted with walnut shell to clean them up, then some black powder coat should do the trick.  Discs and calipers for the rear wheel are plentiful on ebay, so that should not be hard.  Doing the axle conversion may take a little more effort though.

I notice the front brake caliper you have is a Nissin, Cool.

Another thing are you sticking with the belt ?

Yep, I like the belt.  Clean and virtually never needs adjusting..  Although I am thinking of using the 1" vs the 1.5" belt.  It will make a little more room if I want to go with a wider tire.

would you be able to change final drive ratio?? MORE TOP END!!!

Im thinking if he wanted to do that a chain would be easier.  I think its an awesome project and I think it will produce some kickass results!  I think lining up the belt shouldnt be too muchof an issue with spacers.  I would think the swingarm might be a issue unless u cut it and weld in some material, ect.

I think this will prob be the kewlest project anyone had done on here.  Good luck lancer.

There are several variations of the rear pulley for HD's, so changing the final ratio would be very easy.
I have not done a proper measurement of the swingarm  yet, but will do so when I start on the rear end work.  I will know then if the stock arm will be adequate of if I will need to get something else.

Do you intend to change the final ratio?? How would that change the bike to your riding habits??

Title: Re: In the Beginning ... new front end build
Post by lancer on 09/07/06 at 04:05:46

It is my intention to change the final ratio.  After I have finished the powder coat on the wheels and have new rubber on the back wheel, I will go through the math to determine what the new ratio is with each of several rear wheel pulley's.   Based on those numbers I will choose the pulley for the occasion.
I would like to be able to cruise at 75mph at about 3500 rpm instead of the 4800 rpm required now.

I would also be nice to be able to just swap out the rear pulley if I wanted more accelerartion.

Are you using a stock frame for this build? Are there any aftermarket frames that are streched for long legged people? How about chopper type with raked neck?

Yep, stock frame.  I do not know of any aftermarket frames for the Savage.
