Title: Handlebar to Tank Clearance
Post by Rockin_John on 08/31/06 at 02:39:10

Just had my '87 for a couple of weeks now, and am feeling much more comfortable with both the bike, and my choice to buy it in spite of known problems of a rider my size on a Savage. When I got it, it had what appear to be later model buckhorn bars on it, but they were sitting on top of 3-4" pull back risers:

Next day, I swapped on the drag bars with slight pullback, that the seller claimed were "original." (Not knowing better, I thought he was mistaken and that the buckhorns with short risers were stock.) But when my Clymer manual arrives, I'll be darned if the bike on the cover isn't just like mine, drag bars and all. (Though it appears that theirs has an aftermarket muffler installed.)

Mine w/drag bars:

Here's the problem... Even with my bars turned up to the highest tolorable angle, when I put the levers in my comfortable position, and turn to full lock, the throttle cable and other things just touch the tank on either side.

These risers measure around 3 1/2" from the tree to mid-handlebar. What am I missing here? I'd like to adjust the bars to have a tiny bit of drop, instead of rolled up, but that is out of the question as things are.

Anyone with a Clymer manual can see that my risers and bars look right, but...???

Any useful info greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

John

All of the cables and such on my S40 are routed to the center of the bars, then they go behind the headlamp.  There is a wire "cage" which holds everything together behind the light, it bolts to the underside of the top steering stem bracket.

Your bar setup looks great to me!

Here's a guy with an 87 & drag bar, note the cabling routed behind headlight.

Yep, that routing looks good. I also notice that those risers look aftermarket, and about 6" tall.

I really don't want to buy new risers right now, as new bars are probably in near future.

When I first put my drag bar on with the risers it touched the tank too. I just rolled the control switch boxes down a bit so that the cables would not hit. That way you can leave the bar the way you want it and the controls dont hit.
