Title: How fast can you go?
Post by mavrik on 08/29/06 at 18:27:12

I'm a new rider so I want to know how fast everybody has gone on their Savage? :o Me I get to about 65 mph and I feel if I go any faster I'm gonna lose it. Also I have a vibration in my right footpeg at that speed. Thanks

I've read of riders with modded bikes pushing close to 100 ..... that's fast on two wheels!  Too fast for me!

with a fairly large windscreen, 80 mph.

Tucked behind a laid down windscreen I've seen 95 mph twice.

80 is no problem for me (6 ft 220lbs) small windscreen.
Hit 90 with the stock muffler hollowed out!

of course that is an easy ride when I have driven almost 10,000 miles on the German Autobahns with my 1400 Intruder.

Running down the Harbor Freeway my eyeballs started vibrating at about 85 mph.  We haven't the best pavement here in LaLaLand.

LOL When I drove a truck we called LA "shakeytown". I like lalaland too.

90 hasn't been a problem for me but "Thing" is screaming when he gets there.

KLX only does 100mph because she is only geared for 100.

Stock 2006 I've gotten up to 87.  I'm trying for 90 but the area where I know there are no cops and the road is smooth is only one exit so it is pretty short.  I notice I can go faster if I've been running 75 on the highway it is not such a big leap.

Some guys got up to over 100 w/ carb mods.  I don't care about going that fast on a regular basis.

Post by Veritas on 08/30/06 at 05:55:59

Stock S40 I got her to 80, and I regularly run her at 75.  No windscreen.  Make sure you wear a full face at that speed!

As for the vibration, at least on my bike, from 61-65, she vibrates the hell out of me.  Must be the harmonic balance of the motor.  Anyways, if I go a bit above that, the vibration mostly goes away.  So ride at 67, and you'll be fine!

I can get 95 before the bars start swaying then it is time to shut her down

Mine is cut down to less than 300 pounds. 100 mph was no problem before I put the apehangers on it. Stripped down to racing trim, it has gone 115 (radar verified) on a track. A member of the old Heise forum had his up to 112.

In its current configuration, anything over 85 is a bit painful.

If you want to go fast on a cruiser, you bought the wrong bike. I have a Vulcan 800A that runs out of road before it runs out of throttle. With the minor mods done to it, it is capable of 140ish, and still has stock gearing...

Welcome to the forum.

This is not the MC for high speeds. Mine would do just over 70 in stock trim WOT. However, I didn't have any problems with vibrations at those speeds.

Three digit mph is no problem for a lot of MC's, but is a reach for the Savage.

Mine does great on the interstate at 75 or 80 and that is more than fast enuf for me...no vibrations at these speeds either...

80 or so. Best cruise speed is 50.

She does 75 on the freeway (just keeping pace with traffic) on a fairly regular basis without a second thought.  I've had her close to 90 once or twice without realizing the speed had crept up that far and she still had more to give but I backed her down once I realized it.  I really prefer somewhere around 60-65, both for comfort and fuel efficiency.  My mileage really drops off at speeds above 65 MPH.

ok ive managed to push my 88 up to 104
but id never do it again it was too scarey & the savage was built to cruize & brakes are not ment for stoping at that speed
ive got a kwak GPZ 305B (belt drive) thats quicker but i still prefere tha savage

keep in mind i wear work boots. i had it at about 85ish and it felt like it still had some left in it but my feet were literly lifting off the pegs from the wind so i brought it back down to a nice 60ish.  The wife maxes and cruz's at about 70

long haul, super slab, WOT with some down hill help, right at 100. It requires a hug of the tank.

Got her up to 85 but ran out of nerve  :o and still have half way to full throttle.

If you are looking for speed even a std Savage could stand a 10% hike in gearing. Has anyone found pulleys that will do this ?

I've had my Savage up to 70.  Which is also known as the speed limit.  Call me crazy, but I don't get any thrills from going faster.

In any case, I've never thought of the Savage as a "fast" bike.  I've not had any interest in going faster.  Like WD, if you want to go faster, you've got the wrong bike.

Which is why I'm happy with what I have, and so saved money with NOT buying a Yamaha fz6.  I have more in my pocket and I'm happier than I would be with that particular bike!  So ha!  ;)

Any new bike is going to cost money(only 2 k more than a new S40), and if u buy one used u can get a pretty good deal on it.  I still think it has the most bang for the buck.  Imagine having over 90 hp insted of 25-30.

When u hit 7k rpm it opens up a can of whoop ass.  Then scream it until it hits the rev limitor at 14.5k.  I definitely enjoyed not having a bike payment but that will end soon.  Only been 3 months and I got her 45% paid off already.  Can u believe I sold my 95 Savage for 2k?  I still look at the pics of Torques paintjob and smile.  She was a great bike and still a great choice.

Man, I can't begin to imagine that.  My other bike is around 50hp, and it's as much as I need/can deal with.  My hat is off to you for managing thing.

Ride safe!

You don't have to go WOT to off or ride around at screaming rpm's all the time, but if you have the notion it's fun to have it at the crack of a throttle. My Concours is actually easier to ride than the Savage was at anything above walking speed. It's also nice to sail along at 90+ mph for 500+ miles a day for a week and be able to get off the MC and walk straight.  :-* Gotta love the loss of Monkey butt.

Be careful while zipping around at Warp 7 out there young dude.    There is not much time to react at 138 mph.
