Title: Brake Shoes' Leading Edge Post by georgekathe on 08/14/06 at 04:58:02 Hi - Comes up every time I do a brake shoe change - I can never remember which is the leading edge. The Clymers & other manuals I've read on other bikes over the years states that when fitting new shoes you file/chamfer off the leading edge so it does not grab/bind under braking. All logical to me - but which is the leading edge?! Let's say as you look at the brake shoes fitted back into their place on the backing plate - which edge to chamfer/file down - the "left or right" edge of each shoe? Don't want to file off both edges to safeguard as I'll be in effect cutting down on my contact area a little. If anyone could answer by 2:00 PM Mountain Time today (Monday 8/14) I'd be most grateful as want to do brake job this afternoon when off work (yeah, I know I left it until last minute to ask, but...don't we all do it sometimes?) Thanks, an old hand @ brake shoe changes who just can't retain some of the basic rules over the years, George ??? |

Title: Re: Brake Shoes' Leading Edge Post by drums1 on 07/24/11 at 06:06:15 I replaced my shoes this past winter with the EBC's. Seems to me both shoes had pre-beveled edges on both the leading and trailing edges. If not, a quick filing will do the trick. |
