Title: Hi Everyone
Post by tro1711 on 07/19/06 at 14:16:23

Hi all,

I’ve been lurking on the site for several months, and I finally feel like I have a good reason to post.  I’ve had my 2001 silver/blue Savage since September, although I only started riding it this past spring.  In fact, I only started riding at all this past spring, and the Savage is my first and only bike.  Since Easter, I’ve racked up about 3600 miles, mostly short cruises and commutes.

In all that time, the bike has been very dependable, with only a flat rear tire (ran over some muffler shrapnel or something) and twice I have experienced the engine dying at 60 or so.  It started right back up both times, so I favor the kickstand hypothesis at this point.  Following the advice of some here on the site, I've replaced both tires with ME880’s.  No other changes so far

I am taking a one-day break before finishing up my first long trip, from the Cleveland area to Sleeping Bear Dunes in northern Lower Michigan and back.  I’ve done my best to stay on 2-lane roads, and I’ve done about 900 miles with maybe 250 left to do to get home.  I plan to rest up an entire day here in East Lansing before the final pull back to Cleveland on Friday.  Both my butt and my brain need a break.

I am posting to introduce myself and to recommend the Sleeping Bear Dunes as a great place to visit.  The cruising is fantastic, with wonderful sites and great roads.  I can recommend Michigan 22 (M22) from Glen Arbor to Frankfort, with side trips on M109 and the Pierce Stocking scenic road.  Sweeping curves, 200+ foot dunes, blue water and lots more.  Great stuff.  A guy I talked with said that M22 from one end to the other is well worth the trip.

Another nice leg of the trip was Ohio 163 from Marblehead to Oak Harbor, picking up Ohio 105 in Oak Harbor and taking it to Bowling Green.  This is maybe 50 miles one way, and is great rural riding.  Ohio 105 is so lightly traveled that grass grows in the cracks in the asphalt.  I’ll be doing part of this backwards Friday.

I’ve been getting about 50 mpg, and there have been no real safety issues.

Y’all seem like a great group of people, and I’m happy to be here.

Cheers,

TRO
