Title: Timing cover
Post by marty62253 on 07/19/06 at 09:38:01

I'm trying to check the valves for the first time since I got my Savage. I'm having a heck of a time getting the ignition timing cover off to set engine at TDC. What works on this oversized screw other than the Honda tool that Clymer talks about??

See the first post in this thread.

3rd pic, and link below.  An oversized screw driver may work too.

But don't post questions in threads in the Tech forum.

I welded two large washers together then used channel locks to turn them. works great.
I believe Honda might still sell a tool designed for that purpose; as a matter of fact, I think the Clymer manual for the Savage used to recomend that tool?
you probably will not even have to weld them together.

Yep, that's what I got.  Beats the heck out of mangling that cover with a screwdriver or washer or whatever the heck else one might use to try and get it loose.

I use a wide blade flat chisel. Turn it with adjustable wrench.
Doesn't disfigure anything. Guess I'm cheap. ;D

Thanx for the feedback & the links. Let's see how quick bikebandit gets that tool out to me.
AND
Thanx for the heads up on clymer giving the wrong direction to turn engine when aligning TDC.

Me too, I use those $.99 round spark plug gap measurement tool and a adjustable wrench. Did not mangle anything and fit perfectly in the slot ;D
