Title: 87 won't start...help!
Post by chris_in_va on 07/08/06 at 13:59:26

I've got this bike for sale on ebay with one day left, and today it wouldn't stay running.  The carb has been cleaned and rejetted and ran fine for a while, but it just suddenly quit on me.

I'm getting spark and fuel, the plug is wet.  Any ideas?

It may be a petc0ck problem. Try running it on "PRIME" and see if things improve.

Maybe it's dirt in the carb/jets. I would put 2 or 3 ounces of Sea Foam carb cleaner in a full tank of gas and rap on the float bowl with the handle of a screwdriver. This will free up a sticking float needle.

Very frustrating.  Brand new petcock, newly cleaned/rejetted carb and it's getting good spark...

I had to pull it off ebay since it refuses to run.

after the battery has not been on a charger for at least 12-24hours what is the voltage reading?

Hard to say...I keep charging the battery, try to start it a few times...feel like shooting it then let it sit a couple days.   :P

I'll charge it again and see what it does.

Try changing the spark plug, I had a bad one straight out of the box and it took me all week to figure out the problem. The kick stand safety switch can cause all types of starting trouble, check it with a meter or bypass it. Luck with it

My bike ran good when I bought it and then suddenly quit on me a couple days later -- very similar to what yours is doing.  I tried everything to no avail.  The spark plug was wet and I cleaned and regapped it but still no luck.  Finally, in desperation, I replaced the spark plug and voila! it ran.  Weird.

You know what, I'm gonna get a new plug tomorrow.  The one in there right now came with the bike in one of the saddlebags.  It's reading 12.8v at the battery after sitting for 12 hours, so no real drain there.  I'll report back tomorrow.

Looks like it was the plug after all!  Fired right up after changing it out.  Unfortunately it's still getting carbon fouled pretty bad so back to the shop it goes.  The backfiring got eliminated but still not running as it should.

glad it fired up with the new plug - on the voltage business - the deal is below 12.3v or so the engine will turn over but the ign system will not fire enough to run. 12.8v is great.
