Title: Experience with decal under the clearcoat
Post by cstout on 07/07/06 at 12:29:13

Has anyone attempted to remove the main tank decal from under the clearcoat?  I want to remove it but I'm sure I would have to repaint the tank afterward, no?

here we go, one more time. yes it can be removed, but you do end up with a clear coat line where the decal was.   remove tank, drain fuel, heat up with blow dryer, dig fingernail under corner, peel away.  you drain the fuel because it keeps the tank to cool to remove sticker.

depending on your skills level, you can feather in a new layer of clear coat, or just leave it that way and polish the heck out of it.

Sorry, sluggo, I searched for this answer before asking but didn't come up with much.  Maybe I wasn't searching for the right words.

What I'm wondering, though, is if there is clearcoat under the decal.  I figure the factory paint is a basecoat/clearcoat combo and that the decal was placed only over the basecoat.

over the final coat of paint, under the clearcoat.
