Title: darn seal is leaking...
Post by wicks on 07/05/06 at 09:09:58

My block is spitting oil!  Ruining a nice shiny block.  :'(
Has anyone changed the seal themselves or is this better off done at a dealership?

Also, what can I use to clean all that expensive OPEC oil off of my engine block?

If you have some mechanical inclination, it's pretty easy to do, and a good chance to set your valves, too. You'll want at least a Clymer manual or a close study of the technical section of this forum.
cheers,
Mac

Top seal on my engine block.  THe faster I go, the more oil it spits out.  Only leaks when I am moving.

Head gasket to be more exact.  Not sure I feel like doing it myself.  How much could this cost at a dealership?  200-300 dollars to replace the seal for me?

ok - you have the infamous plug leak -
you can do it your self in say 4-6 hours - read the following post - just make sure you understand all that is said - odds are if you take it to a dealer they will not fix it proper without some help.

I think I'm having the same problem. It appears that oil is leaking from the gasket onto the cyclinder. When I'm moving, it has sprayed oil all along the left side of the bike, even as far back as the shocks. It must be a very slow leak b/c it still has the recommeded amount of oil as far as I can see. Something between the intake tube and the cylinder.
I don't know much about the mechanics, but I think a seal or the gasket is leaking. Did you find out how much it cost to have this fixed? Or how to fix it?
Thanks,
Pam

Check the technical section.  There's a nice write-up on fixing the seal.
