Title: Header bolts
Post by Brewbrother on 07/04/06 at 14:51:00

Anyone have trouble with header bolts backing out?? I developed a up shift backfire yesterday on the way home from work. Started checking connections and found brake side header bolt had worked its way out 2 turns. Shifter side header bolt 21/2. Should I use some locktite or other product??

I had that problem after I replaced the gasket. I suppose it took several tightening cycles to fully crush the gasket. After 3 or 4 times it seems to have crushed and the bolts are staying put.

As far as using locktite, I think that is a big NO.  These are steel bolts threaded into an aluminum head.  You should be using anti-sieze compound on the bolts.

So re-torque the bolts.  After your next ride, let the engine cool and check it again.

I think I will go with Sluggos suggestion and add it to a weekly schedule.

you can leave the navy, but the navy never leaves you.  and it's scarry at times.  i'll wake up some nights running damage control drills in my mind.  i left the navy 29 years ago.

Yeah, some things you just never forget... like:

General quarters, general quarters... All hands man your battle stations.

-or-

Reveille, reveille... All hands heave out and trice up.

-or-

The smoking lamp is out throughout the ship....

Every time we go on a cruise for a vacation, it just never seems right without bosuns pipes.

Much like the crush gasket on the muffler. It took a couple of tries till it was right. Your effort and insight is noted and appericiated.

Well as for the header bolts I have seen the same thing with them backing out just have to retighten weekly.

As for the navy I am still living it have about 7 years to go and then they pay me to go ride my bike but I don't think I will ever miss the bos'n pipe.

I use stainless allen head bolts where the header joins the head, comes out more easily but not on it's own.

I've been wrapping the threads on the bolts with a piece of teflon tape, no problems with the bolts coming loose so far.
