Title: Tire price, mounting questions.......
Post by olscout99 on 06/12/06 at 18:37:21

OK, I've been reading stuff on here about tires, not knowing I'd have to use it so soon :(  But, I got to looking hard yesterday and I found my OEM IRC's are weather cracked....which I'm not fond of at all. So, using the info I got here, I kind of narrowed the choices to a Dunlop K555 rear and a D404 front, or the Metzeler ME880's on both ends. I had to work, so I had the girlfriend stop at the big Suzuki shop to grab a jet (which they had!) and an Iridium plug (which they didn't) and price out the tires, installed.  HOLY $%^@! The guy said the K555 is discontinued, so he priced both D404's for her- $90 front, $130 rear, with installation at $63 per. ME 880's were $129 front, $182 rear, same installation. Sounds like a lot to me....so I'm thinking get on the net, I know I can still get a K555 cause I was looking today, and for less than $130. Buy my tires, pull my wheels and carry em in to a bike shop and have them mounted (yeah, I know, there are guys that do it in their sleep, but me and tire irons, tubes, etc have a long sad history and I'll pay to avoid that aggravation).  What seems to be the going rate for mounting tires on rims that are already off the bike? How much of a hassle am I getting into by yanking the wheels myself? I'm pretty up on cars and 4x4's, I can rebuild a Kohler or a Briggs or a Chevy 350, but I have no bike experience at all. Also, any links to places with cheap tires would be welcome!

I took my bike to the local bike shop and the guy there changed both my tires which I didn't buy from him for $30 each. Plus $5 for the spoke band in the rear that he replaced. My local stealership was something like $65 or $70 a wheel for mounting. Hence the word "Steal-ership"

Check J&P cycles, they are reasonable on shipping price and quick to get it to ya.

i've had three tires mounted and balanced at the local harley shop, including the suzuki front, $15.00 each, the trick is to take only the wheel and tire in, it saves them time and you money. the last dunlop D404 i bought for the suzuki from ebay seller "MAW" (they're in idaho if memory serves me), something like $53.00 including shipping.

Or you can buy your own balancer....put the money out up front and pays for itself in just a few uses. I've used mine twice so far on my last set of motorcycles..it's not hard to do and saves you having to either have someone else mount and balance your tire when you can do it yourself.

About the tires ME880 are at least 1 level above D404 /entry level Dunlop tire/. So far I don't know anybody to say anything bad about ME880.
The cheapest tire place on the I-net that I know about
is http://www.americanmototire.com/. Rear 140 -$113
fr- 100-$81.
About M&B - between $10 and $20 if You bring only the wheels.

Got a ME880 rear tire, stock size, from ronayers for $130.00. The dealership charged $35.00 to change it out with ballance which it needed. Also had them replace the tube for another $14.00. Putting the bike back together next couple of days for some weekend riding ;D.

I just got a bike shop to order, and install two Metzler ME 880 tires, with tubes, and balancing.  The shop removed the tires there, as I took the bike in to get the jetting done as well.  The total labour for the jetting and tire job was $255.00 Canadian.

Front ME 880 tire = $170 Cdn.
Rear ME 880 tire = $245 Cdn.
new tubes = $20 Cdn.

Hope this helps.

Just bit the bullet and ordered a K555 rear and D404 front, with new tubes, from Tires Unlimited. $160 and change shipped for all of it, which is only about thirty bucks more than the dealership wanted for a D404 rear!  And, I found a local shop (not a 'stealership') that'll install em for $45 front, $55 rear- I ride the bike in with old tires, ride it out with new, so that's the way I'm gonna go, unless I get antsy and decide to yank the wheels myself. With the 'to do list' I've got though, that's not too likely.....  :(

Do what you do well.  Let others do what they do well.  Those mounting prices are about average from what I've seen around here.  I have a D404 on the back with 7500 miles on it, about 80% worn -- not bad for how I abuse tires.  Next rear will likely be a ME880 as I hear they have longer treadlife.

In Italy, near Milan, a couple of Dunlop is priced 300€, about 375$...

I think that a no comment is better...

Wow, I must have a really good bike store here in Hurst,Tx.  I replaced my rear tire with the original IRC 140/80 for $71.00 and the mounting and balancing was free as long as I brought the wheel in.  My IRC tire lasted 13,000 miles so I am sticking with this tire.

A Metzler ME880 wil last about 80% to 90% as long as a Dunlop D401, D402 or D404- because of the softer compound used in it's construction -   BUT- you will feel a tremendous improvement in performance - both dry and in the rain (for bettr traction you'll need to go to tubeless radials) - AND they roll smoother than what you had which you will feel (actually, feel less) in the seat of your pants and in your palms  - AND they will maintain similar fuel efficiency in spite of the softer compound and increase in traction. I suggest you change both at the same time if the bank can handle it.  You will be very happy, especially if you ride fast, ride far or just keep finding roads that make you lean a lot. I've used them (and still do) on larger bikes and they are definitely going on my Savage as soon as I can get it done.
AND, yeah, it takes almost twice as much $$$$ - BUT - your friends (and significant others if applicable) will  wonder what you're smiling about!

13,000 miles out of a IRC rear tire is amazing, after 5,000 miles on my '02 the rear IRC tire was bald as a baby's  butt.  No burn outs, just from riding around :-/.

I was also amazed!  However I weigh 160 pounds and I ride very easy usually 50mph or less. I  very seldom ride on the freeways and use my bike to commute to work through back roads. I try to ride to get the best gas mileage as possible.
