All right. Here's the story.

Bought bike non-running a couple of weeks ago. Previous owner had it serviced (don't know what exactly) and new tires put on it and two weeks later it wouldn't start. That was 6 months ago. It's an '87 with 11,200 miles. Cleaned carb, replaced spark plug and it's good to go.

Did 1/2 spacer mod, put aftermarket pipe on (not sure what kind, it came with the bike). Put drag bars on. Put a couple of hundred miles on it.

Then today, I went to start it and it fired and then died. When I tried again, no compression at all. Motor just spun. I pulled off the valve lash cover and hit the starter and the valves aren't moving at all.

Oil level is good and has been since I've been riding it.

Broken timing chain? Are the timing chain sprockets keyed to the shafts? Could the key have come out and they're just freewheeling?

What do you guys think?

Sounds like the cam chain to me. bummer :(

you could pull the plug on the leftside and see if the engine is spinning or if the starter is just freewheeling - seems the before '95 model bikes did sometimes crack the starter gear mount

Not the starter. When I put it in 4th and push it, the same thing happens. Engine turns over with no compression. I guess I'll start taking it apart today and see if any other damage (valves, piston, etc.)

The cam shaft sprocket has two 6mm bolts that hold it to the cam shaft.
99% sure You are looking at cam chain, cam chain tensioner and may be one valve. Hopefully the piston is still good.
It is not usual for the cam chain to wear so fast, but You never know how real is the milage and how was the bike maintained.
