Title: Whoa... seat!
Post by Veritas on 06/05/06 at 19:38:51

I was just watching American Chopper, and they mounted a seat to the frame with a front hinge and a little shock instead of springs.  Looks like a mini rear shock.  Has anyone ever done this on a Savage?  Is it possible?  I think that would be a kickass mod, if it was possible.

i've been toying with the idea.  looks like you would have to remove the air box and use a cone filter. use the airbox space for the shock..  could work.

Yeah, a mountain bike rear shock should be good. Damping as well as springing.

What keeps it from swinging side to side?  The hinge in the front and a single point of support in the middle does not seem to be stable.

apparently the front hinge is wide enough to be stable, at least on the OCC bike...

Now THAT is how they should have started out. That frame is strutted properly (inline with the backbone). Looks like one of the stock shocks for the seat suspension. Color matched headlight bucket. Looks like a Vulcan or Shadow tank. Upswept fishtail, no muffler.

Robert is supposed to be over tonight with the struts for Pokey. Using a set of car leafspring lift shackles for now. Will close the fender gap and let him ride while we are machining the stainless or aluminum replacements. I dug out a set of CMX450C tubeless spoke wheels the other day, 18 front, 15 rear. So, the bike will keep the proper spoked wheel look, but be able to run modern tubeless tires. Well, assuming the wheels bolt in fine that is. I'll haul the bike up and test fit them later, moving comes first. If it works, the bike will have nice, narrow, 90/90/18 front, 130/90/15 rear tires. Better handling!

Oh, for anyone who wants to try the seat shock set-up, I hve a copy of The Horse Backstreet Choppers that walks you through it. Not the clearest directions in the world, nor the best photos, but, it's a start. Sluggo, I sent you the pages, do they transfer alright via e-mail or should they be hardcopied and snail mailed?

I wanna know what mods those are and parts. I would love to get my savage to look like that. That is very nice.
