Title: I did 5 (FIVE) mods today!! (with photos)
Post by Lion on 05/20/06 at 13:44:20

Yes!! I DID it! I did not one, not two but FIVE mods today. Short description follows.

Today I did the following modifications:
1. Denso platinum spark plug
2. Spark plug door
3. Pod style air filter
4. Main jet from 132.5 to 137.5
5. 1/2 white spacer

It took 5 hours. This was the first time I dismantled the bike, except the seat mod I did earlier. I removed the seat,  the fuel tank (it came off easily) and the battery wit the box.
I had some trouble with the top of the carb because the screws weren't move. WD40 and gentle hammer hits solved2 of them but I had to drill out the 2 other  :-/
Later I replaced all with hex (allen) type ones.
The spark plug door thingy works well but I will have to put something instead of the backside screw because the door knock a little the engine.
I was so tired I tried the settings only for 10 minutes. Tomorrow I will ride it for a little more time.

Photos to come...

Spark plug door. I will put something in to end the noise. The infamous oil leak is there too  :(

Denso platinum spark plug.

The new air filter. I love the sound as it sucks the air in when I pull gas!

The carb needle. There are 3 positions on it, what are they for?

http://members.chello.hu/szep.tamas/Savage/Mods/What is this 1.JPG
I found this plug under the tank. What is this for?

http://members.chello.hu/szep.tamas/Savage/Mods/What is this 2.JPG
And this?

After all the work was done I fired up the bike. It wasn't starting that easy since everything was out and then been put back. After 3-4 ignitions something boomed a loud and the pod filter coughed back some gasoline.  Finally the engine started and the bike had some great sound!! Yahhhhooooooo!! Then I took out the bike for a short ride (oops, without helmet, jacket...). It had very cool sound I mean much more sharp as before. As I give gas the air filter sucks in the air and it gives a cool sound too  ;)
One more thing: the bike NEVER backfired after stopping the engine!

So that is all for today. I am very proud of myself however I am not used to be.  8)

I think the plug is for the decompression solenoid (which looks like it is missing from your bike) If it's hard on the battery to start that will be the reason. I know because my solenoid controller is shot.

I like the look of the denso I might get that myself.

And you need a big can of degreaser to clean that puppy up.

Oh, and good job by the way, it's always a good day when fixing the bike goes well.

Lion, you've made a mistake in your carb tuning. You should not have filed your spacer. In the 7th picture you show the adjustable needle and ask "what is that for ?" The simple answer is by moving the clip from the 2nd position to the bottom position that would  assimilate filling your spacer. Most of the owners on this board do not have an adjustable clip, so the spacer mod is common advise that unfortunately is not good for you.

;D Today I had it washed. But the top of the engine remains as it was...

Oops... What do you advise then? Replace the spacer?
Because the bike runs like hell. Read my following message.

Today I went out for a little ride. Oh my goodness, IT KICKS A$$!
It is a totally different bike now! When I give gas I feel the bike pulls me. Even when the throttle is at about 3/4. Not to mention the sound! It is LOUD and the rattling is like it had come to life.
I was enjoying it a lot, I couldn't stop not to give gas.

Thank you very much. I will be fully satisfied after 2-3 weeks of riding, I hope nothing falls out of the bike  :)

The 2 plugs are
1 the decompression solenoid
2 the controller of the decompresion solenoid

The plug with the 6 connectors has 2 of them connected to make the ignition circuit working.

The decompression solenoid and the controller are completely missing from your bike.

What year is the bike and is it a 652 CC or a 396CC??

It is a 396CC from 1996 (as it is in my signature  ;)).

What on earth is a decompression solenoid? What is it good for? (And why don't I have one...)

Hey Lion

Is that a RC1250 filter on there ?

No, it is this:

Bottom right corner.

I oiled it with K&N airfilter oil.

I didn't realize it was the 396, it may not need the decomp. solenoid, but still use the same wire harness would be my guess. (Lion the decomp. solenoid lets out cylinder pressure on start-up to make it easier on the starting system, but being a smaller cylinder it probably doesn't require it.

Thanks for the info. Should put it in the tech docs (maybe it is there somewhere).

bentwheel: I am still waiting for the advise about the spacer.

I would leave the half spacer in place. It sounds like it is running good. If you feel the need to further enrichen the mid range, you now know to move the clip lower.

What's the bore & stroke on the 400 ? and the final drive if you don't mind me asking.
Thanks

Huh, I am relieved... I was afraid you tell me to replace the original size spacer. Which is completely impossible now  ;D

Cylinder head cover looks the same casting but lacks the provision for the decompressor completely.
Just collected another piece of (un)usefull information.
Thanks.

There is still some backfire when I stop the engine  >:( However it is only a little "pooh" sound.
The other backfire is during riding when I release the throttle back for example at shifting gear. What can I do? Does it mean a rich mixture?
And is it all right that the engine has louder sound than before? I think it is caused by the bigger detonations am I right?

Bore = piston diameter.
stroke = how far up and down it goes.  On most of the 652 cc savages here, the bore and stroke are both 94 mm.

Thanks for the "translating". However I still don't know the answers  :D Maybe a Japanese Suzuki mech guy knows it...

Bore (furat) = 73,2 mm
Stroke (löket) = 94 mm

According to one of my friends the 650 and the 400 have the same crankshaft, but smaller cylinder diameter.

It gives 24 HP @ 7000, and 26,5 Nm @ 4000.

Thanks for the answer.
By the way: today a guy in shirt and scooter-helmet with a Suzuki Burgman simply overran me without efforts... I didn't know it is such a fast scooter.  :-/

I have read that topic earlier. It got to my mind immediately after this "incident"  :D
At first I didn't see that was a Burgman, I saw it only when it was going in front of me.
