Post by starmom on 05/18/06 at 16:13:23

Was on the phone today talking with a progressive insurance dude who also rides... I was telling him about my maiden voyage today and how i forgot and left the aux  on somehow instead of off and it would have stunk if my battery was out....

he mentioned that you can push start it in that situation?

please enlighten me..........

thanks.......

sue

Not easy to do on the savage because it is a fairly big single it tends to just slide the tire. The 2 times I've done it: with the key off, first I put it in either 3rd or 4th and while on it roll it forward enough that I'm sure it's past the compression stroke. Switch the lights to low beam. Switch the key on, and the run switch on, get it going as fast as you can while holding the clutch in - slight hill is very helpful - hop on the bike, hit the start button just in case you have enough battery to open the valves, sit down as hard on the seat as you can and pop the clutch.

by the way it's pretty easy to jump start off a car if you install a hot wire/pig tail on the battery before hand and just keep tucked in behind the tool box.

And as a possibly helpful sidenote, it's sometimes easier if you have a second person with you helping push.  At least, it's been so when I've helped other people with it (thankfully, I've never had a dead battery...yet).

These bikes are pretty tough to push - or at least this  geezer thinks so - man I had 120kaw that the kick had strip on push it every time for several months until had the it tack welded

i've found that rolling it backwards till it stops in a high gear that workes best for me.

I used to be able to get mine after a couple tries every time.  Now even with a perfect spot to do it I'm lucky to get it started that way.  So ya, install the wire.  Leave the car off when you jump it.

^^^^^^Not a bad idea.

However, make D*MNED sure you insulate this wire properly and tuck it away carefully.  A short here sounds like a good way to burn your bike to the ground.

Last couple of weeks have been cold and the bike hard to start.  I've found that I could get the bike rolling (clutch in and in first gear), hit the starter for a few seconds (normal start time) then pop the clutch and get it to start.  And popping the clutch deactivates the starter.  One of these days I'm going put in the light relay, as it seems that the battery has enough to turn it over and run the lights but not run the engine.  Just installed the Big Crank Battery so might not need that for a while.

Make sure your girl friends house is on the top of a hill.
Then you can do a roll start, maybe in 3rd gear. ;D

Just a thought while reading this thread...

I had recently decided to install a toggle switch into the back of the headlight bucket to allow me to turn off the headlight while starting.  I went this route because it was just simpler than using a relay to do it automatically.  I realize the relay would have negated the need for me to remember to turn the light back on but now I'm thinking it may be a better choice if I need to push-start her.

In the Isle of Man all TT racers started there bikes that way, 2nd gear, pull it backwards until you feel resistance from compression, pull in the clutch lever, run as fast as you can ,jump on side saddle ,at the same instant your butt hits the seat let the clutch lever go,now put your right leg over and off you go,  (gasping for air,and your legs feeling like jello)

I was just thinking about putting the jump-start-wire (for lack of a better turn) on mine last night.

Will definately do it as soon as I get the chance.
