Title: Possible Oil Leak?
Post by simplyput2600 on 05/07/06 at 18:55:51

Just got back from my longest bike ride yet, which was 300 miles round trip. and as i was looking at my motorcyle i realized what i always thought was dirt grime on my header is actually oil.
At first i thought this is normal, but then i realized there was not as much oil on the headers right side compared to the left. If this is a leak what do i do about it? is it a gasket? are you all experincing the same amount of oil on the header?

In this photo above you can also see, what i think is oil splatter on the battery cover.

It looks like u blew a head gasket, I am not 100 % sure though.

Not to be too much of a smart @ss but...

The oil goes inside the engine. There is nothing normal about that. Better break out the wrenches and do some exploritory surgery.

It's the rubber cap/plug in the head cover. Go to the technical file and see how to fix it.

Definitely the cap. My Zook spent the entirety of last year looking like that, complete with splatter marks on my battery box.

It must not be too serious. I never lost enough oil to be noticeable in the sight glass, and that was riding 50-60 miles a day at 70 mph for several months, putting a total 6,000 miles on the Zook with two oil changes in the process.

That said, read up on the plug leak fix, buy the new rubber plug (cheap) and fix it to get the unsightliness off your head. And avoid any serious trouble, should the plug decide to rapidly decay and spill your engine's guts.

Regards,
Banger

Plug/cap leak. Are you a wrench twister??

There's a cavaty next to the header where it meets the head. The bottom of the infamous plug can be seen  there. If it is leaking you can see and feel it.

Next look in the technical section for the restoration.
