Title: Aaaah, my tank!
Post by dreamweaver on 04/28/06 at 20:34:34

I took my gas tank to a radiator shop today to have the rust taken out and re-lined.  The guy ended up destroying the paint on the tank!  The whole left side is almost to the metal.

Anyway, any ideas for getting this thing painted for less than the $400 I'm being quoted?  Maaco maybe?  I may be selling it soon and need to get the tank done.  Small claims court may not be out of line on this one.

might try painting it yourself. its small enough that with a good quality spray paint you can make a great lookin job.  clear coat it and it can look  like it was professionaly done for under $20. take the guy to court and with the money you save you can make a down payment on the Savage for sale that steelwolf found on ebay ;D

yea - I've had great success using rattle-can on tanks.  As long as get the rest of the tank down to metal, prime and go slow you can get very good results...

How do you get it stripped down? Blast it?

Go ahead and take the other four pieces to a paint shop and get it painted the color you want. I paid $180.00 for my paint job.

;D ;D  take it back to the radiator shop.  :o :o

ok  couldn't help my self .

i think this is a live and learn situation, i personally don't see that job being done with out damage at a radiator shop. i had the same job done on my old thumper, but they made no assurance of no damage. and did minor damage.

this is a good place to ask before tackling a task of that nature, you will find it's a great resource, and it's easier to take advantage of our mistakes before you make to many yourself.  in the tech section there is a good write up of repainting.

as for the courts, unless he unmistakablely said no damage, it's a lost cause.

Yeah, you can buy stripper at Autozone that'll take it to bare metal.

If your bike is old enough for derusting, it's value for small claims court is stuff jokes are made of.  I think, since you selling it, I'd watch for s same color tank on Ebay..unles you rattle can the whole of it.  Best of luck Dreamweaver..moving on to another ride??
