Title: Air filter mod
Post by Bryner on 04/21/06 at 07:18:21

Hi everyone!!!

I want to install a new filter on mi bike like this:

http://www.scooterpartsrus.com/tall_cone_air_filter_kit.jpg

But I don't know the exterior diameter of the inlet of the carb.
Does anyone know this size???

I'm not in home now and don't come back till next week, if you tell me this I can buy the filter here and install it when I return home...

Thank you guys!!!  ;D

I think when I got mine it was 60mm air filter.  Works great and saves alot of space.  Kinda hard to mount because if you dont take out the airbox (the top hits it, except in the divit in the middle) it will tilt the carb forward a little.

so take out ur battery and box.  mount the air filter 1st and then replace barrty  and box.  good lucks

2.25" or 57 mm OD

Don't know the o.d., but the K&N part # is RC-1250, on Greg 650's bike anyway.

Lancer might know.

That kn part number gives 2.25" OD.  It is what I was running with my stock carb.

http://www.knfilters.com/search/product.aspx?Prod=RC-1250

2.25" * 2.54 cm/in = 57 mm = 5.7 cm

I put a 60mm on my 87, fits and works great. Looks just like the one in the picture. FYI

So which is right 57 or 60mm, maybe they both are.

Please excuse my error...the stock carb is in fact 57mm, as stated by others already.  (4-28)

The measurement on the carb's filter side, whether stock or Amal/Mikuni, is 62mm.  But, with this particular filter the 60mm version is the one used.  I have not been able to get a 62mm version.  The 60mm will fit the carbs but it is a snug fit.

I finally intalled the air filter and I make a little handwork to make my own inlet tube to the carb and now the filter is ouside the body of the bike.

Now I only have to paint the tube in black because I don't like the colour of the PVC

Bryner

I had a similar mod but with a larger air filter.  Anyways I realized how much easier I made it for water to get in when it rained.  Just thought u would like to know that.

I've thought a lot about this kind of mod...I love the looks of what you've done pulling the filter out the side.  Couldn't we fit a HD style filter housing to avoid the rain issue?  Has anyone done anything similar?

that is why i went with the swiss cheese mod on the stock air box door/cover

Well, if you can stuff it under the seat, it's not such a big deal.  Even so, I'm sure my filter has gotten wet, but I wouldn't say soaked.  Haven't ahd any problems yet.  Besides, oil and water don't mix, so if it's a KN type where you oil the filter...

you better believe the fitler turns black in about 2 weeks...

Bryner,

Do you have pictures and dimensions of how you did the filter mod?
Thanks
Ike

I used a 60mm filter and it clamped easily onto the carb.

Here's a link to the thread that kind of explains what to do:

I already have the pod filter mounted to the carb, I want to know how the mod of putting the filter on the side was done.

Thanks anyway

Doh!   my bad.

Ingenuity, gotta love it.   I was thinking of doing that as well, but I didn't want to do it with PVC pipe.  If I work out how to do it I'll post it.   Hope Bryner posts, he did a good job.

Scroll up to  (Show us your ride) and look at the first bike ( My Mistress) and look at the air filt. and crankcase filter, The ignition box is mounted on the back of the bat box... The bat is in its stock location... I lost the tool box and had my local furnace shop bend me up a bat cover...   o and the cover is retained by one screw and a dog coller   ;D
