Post by mpescatori on 03/30/06 at 05:06:48 Hi all, I have a 1988 Savage (4-speed) and have found a complete 5-speed engine (with half the mileage) from a German eBayer/breaker. 150Euro meaning a rough $180 (plus shipping insurance etc...) My point is, will it fit? ??? Second point, I believe the final drive ratio (belt drive) on the 4-speed was a bit longer than on the 5-speed... by roughly 5% more or less If so, would that really be a problem? My guess is it would make cruising a bit more 'thumpery' and perhaps improve mileage a little bit. Comments, anyone? Thanks, Maurizio |

The CDI and the rotor have different partnumbers. As I have read on the other forum ( LS-savage.de) you either buy the engine with the CDI or you replace the rotor with the one from your "old" engine. BTW: The 5 speed engine was available in Europe as from 1991 Goodluck Kropatchek ;D |

Post by mpescatori on 03/30/06 at 22:19:50 OK so let me get this straight: the 4-speed and 5-speed engines differ not only in the gearbox but in the ignition module as well, so that a straight bolt-on is not possible. Rotor: does this mean 'flywheel' or what? If I have to open the engine and undo a major piece of machinery then the whole job just isn't worth the trouble, might as well buy an entire 5-speed bike. Better yet, chop a DR750/800 and get this whole ordeal over with. Maurizio |

Not so much trouble. Open up the LH side cover of the engine, undo the bolt a few turns and pull the rotor off. You need a special Suzuki puller for that, but maybe you can borrow it from your local dealer. Don't worry about the gearbox, it's one unit with the engine. Post by Max_Morley on 03/31/06 at 22:48:26 Being that the subject of the ignition system changes came up in this thread I'll relate a positive story as a result of someone sharing that experience. I had been asked by my B-i-L to repair a well worn Yamah 350 ATV w/4wd. It was very sad, it had been run through lots of water and totally ruined the front brakes, wheel bearings and one lower ball joint. Also the transmission had some problems. Engine didn not run well. He got the new parts needed and supposedly the same engine tranfer case assembly from e-Bay. When we checked the wiring from the replacement engine to the chassis, it was missing 2 wires. Same trick, one year difference newer in this case and a different, rotor, LH case and pu sensors for the CDI unit. WE changed the parts off the old engine and it started up when we got to that part. So whomever shared the old vs new, thanks, you saved us many hours of grief. Max |
