Title: new tires Post by steelwolf on 04/08/06 at 20:06:38 Today I had the original tires taken off of my 96 due to dry rot cracks around the rim. Replaced with Cheng-Shin Barracudas. I know they aint Dunlops but they are round and rubber. All the same to me. Anyhow, the ride home was wet due to a frog strangler that fell while the tires were being put on so I took my time because of that and the slick new rubber. But here is where I am puzzled. In curves that I take almost daily in the dry @ 55-60 conservatively, the bike seemed to be harder to lay over, like it was trying to stand up. Actually concerned me enough to slow way down once. Any ideas what may have caused this feeling? Me not used to the new tires? Air pressure? Tire compounds? :-/ |
Title: Re: new tires Post by 911radioman on 04/08/06 at 21:05:42 Tire manufacturers recommend not pushing a bike for at least 100 miles after putting a new set of rubber on. I'd say the more you run the bike and the tires wear in, it will settle back in to its old self. |
Title: Re: new tires Post by Dynobob on 04/08/06 at 21:33:55 New tires have some sort of protective coating that takes 100 miles or so to wear off. Ride carefully until you have some miles on your new tires. |

Title: Re: new tires Post by steelwolf on 04/09/06 at 06:18:07 Yea the 100 mi. thing I knew. Reason #2 I was taking my time. But they just felt wierd in the curve. I appreciate the input and I'll definately keep a check on the psi. |

Title: Re: new tires Post by Jim Smith on 04/09/06 at 07:37:36 I've used Cheng-Shen tires before and gotten good service from them. They seem to specialize in odd sizes - I rebuilt and old Yahama RD250 and Cheng-Shen was the only manufacturer that made the original size. Hope this helps. |

Motorcycles are very sensitive to the tire-road contact. They had just repaved Crenshaw just south of 190th and taking the curve I wobbled rather unnervingly. Week later, same curve, all was normal. Even new asphalt makes a difference. |
Title: Re: new tires Post by SavageRider on 04/09/06 at 14:36:27 I recently put new Dunlop tires on my ride. When I left the shop and made the first turn I thought I was going down and immediately straightened it back up. Even being aware that they may be a little squirrley at first, it caught me by surprise. Now that I have several hundred miles on them it's smooth riding again. Very freaky that first turn though. |
Title: Re: new tires Post by steelwolf on 04/09/06 at 16:27:26 Ok, I put 200+mi. on those new tires today and from the word go it was like they had always been on the bike. ;D Thnx for the insight guys, I was kinda unnerved after that 5mi. back to the house yesterday. So to sum it up...monkey butt = yes, tires "broken in" = yes, tired of ridding for the day = HE!! NO! ;D . |
