Like the title says, I need help with the proper method to install leather saddlebags on my 2000 Savage. I bought the bike used and it came with the bags, but they are just slung over the rear seat. I personally do not like the look of it that way and wondered if any of ya'll had any ideas on how to so it right?

Well, you're gonna find a bunch of differing ways to do it. First off, pull the pillion seat and hang the bags across the fender and then reinstall the seat on top of the bag yoke.

On my bags, I got a bit radical and literally bolted my bags to the supports to prevent movement and to have a more secure mount.

When I purchased my bags new they came as right and left and what looked like a long boot string to tie the two straps(attached one each to the bags) together. I took my seat off and and layed these across the fender and lined up the holes until I had the overhang I wanted and put the string through one of the holes so as not to lose my measurement. Then with the whole thing on the floor I laced the string from one hole to another all the way around until it met where I started and tied the ends together securely. Then I layed it back on the fender leveled it up and cut out a section where there is an electronic piece that has cooling fins on it. Don't know what it does but don't want it to overheat! :oAlso cut around the rubber bumpers on the bottom of the seat where they meet the fender. You'll have a hard time getting the seat bolts back in if you don't. Be careful not to cut through the lace you tied this together with! With that done I put the seat back on checked the overhang on both sides and put the bolts back in. Pain in the butt. Looks good and adds much needed storage.

Thanks guys, I will definately try that. Though it will be a few days before I can. Starting tomorrow I'm liable to be running around like a chicken with his head cut off.

I set the height I wanted, and stitched the bags together with zip ties. Easier than fighting with a boot lace like most come with. I used individual brackets (4 total) to hold the bags out the proper distance. This was on my Vulcan 800A, but, mounting them on a Savage is the same idea. And, for convenience sake, stuff the voltage regulator in the air box. Works fine and won't overheat. My Savage has ran it there since 1999.
