Title: Bolt length for seat lift mod
Post by 911radioman on 04/01/06 at 13:58:46

To those of you who have done the front seat lift mod, what length of a bolt did you use?  I know it is an M6, I just want to get the right length.  I'm probably going to go 3/4 to 1" lift.

Okay, found that out...

M6 x 50 or 55 bolt

Question... the #7 rubber stopper I assume is available readily at Lowe's or Home Depot?  Would those be in the plumbing section or elsewhere?

Also, the stick on rubber feet that Reelthing spoke of in an earlier post, what section would I be likely to find those in?

Went up to Lowe's tonight looking for the parts for the seat mod.  Found the #7 stoppers, the 1/4" thick sticky pads -- those were the two things I thought I might have difficulty locating.

Would you believe they didn't have M6 x 50 or M6 x 55 bolts though???

I'm wondering if an allen cap type of bolt would work under the seat, or if the head would be too tall?  I can get those there.  Any thoughts?

Tom,

I took the original bolts to a hardware store. I used the #7 stopper to find a bolt that was as long as the original bolts plus the thickness of the stopper.

I found the bolts in an Ace hardware store in the small drawers with special bolts.

The allen head bolts would work, but you should be able to find hex head bolts. Let me know if you can't find them, I'll send you a couple.

I'm getting ready to run down the road to another hardware store, hopefully they'll have them there.

Just for the record...

I did my seat mod with #4 stoppers and m6x65 bolts. this too because Lowes didn't have the #7s or the 55 bolts. Must be a lot of Savage seat mods going on! ;D

Here is what it looks like on mine http://www.bikepics.com/pictures/554551/

Well, here is my version of the mod...

The above picture shows the rubber pads I used to space up the middle area of the seat.  They are called Grippers and I found them in the section at Lowe's where the stuff is for furniture to keep it from scratching up floors.

Here is what the package looks like...

Now, end of commercial and back to the mod pics...

Again, here are the materials used...

* #7 Rubber Stoppers

*  Grippers rubber pads (self-adhesive)

* 2-M6x55 Hex Head Bolts

* 4- 1/4" fender washers above and below rubber stoppers

I thought it worked out pretty well.  The only concern I have is how well the rubber Gripper pads will stay adhered.  I may go back and revisit that at some point, maybe with contact cement or something, I don't know what right now.
