Title: What is it ?
Post by Gramps on 03/28/06 at 18:55:11

About a month ago I took my 98 Savage engine apart to check the valves, chain guide, & tensioner. I took off the headcover, head, right side crankcase cover, & some guards & smaller parts. Now I'm putting it back together & I can't recall where this part belongs. I can't find any reference to it in Clymers. I hope one of you experts can identify this part & tell me where it goes. Thanks much.

I've got my 96 apart for the same project and do not have any part that looks like that. Have you got some friends (?) who would add a part for the fun of it? Max

This is NOT a Suzuki Savage/S40 part.

Imo It's from an attachment of a sadle bag

I've seen a part that looks like that on a c-clip tool.
It was for changing the pins from stretch to close heads on the tool.

I'm Sure nobodys playing jokes on me, but that is a thought. When I took the motor apart I put most of the bolts, nuts, & small parts in cans, but this part was laying on my oil mat right under the center of the motor. The part was very clean & oily, so based on your replys I'm guessing that this was laying in the bottom of the engine & fell out when I took the right side crankcase cover off. It must have got in there by mistake, so tomorrow it goes back together minus the mystery part. Thanks to all that took time to reply.

Does she run quieter now?
Probably faster too...

???
An educated guess from someone who's never taken apart his own engine...

Could it be the oil relief overpressure valve? (the one that sends excess oil back to the sump)

It looks like a spring loaded camlock fastener, works almost like a cufflink.  Can't say is it not being used by Suzuki, but fasteners like that are used to hold a lid or a cover closed.  I'd hang on to it, if I found where it went then install it.  If not and I found another use, then put it to use.

It is definitely not an oil relief overpressure valve.

Yea, that's what it looks like to me.  The moveable part goes through the hole, then you rotate it 90 degrees so that it cannot come back out. The spring holds the replaceable jaws snug on the handles.

Anyway, that is definitely a fastner. You must be able to access the back of the hole to use it.
