My wife has a 96 savage. all stock. Recently a problem has occurred we could use advise on.

I will run good with the choke on even after it warms up.
It will run good at almost full throttle without the choke on.

The problem is it won't run good with no choke in the 1st quater/half throttle in any gear.

Where do i start looking/fixing?

Sounds like the carb needs a good cleaning, and maybe a rejet. Start by cleaning the carb thoroughly & make sure all the jets are clean and the slide is not sticking.

I would check the air cleaner as well.

Did You forget to mention, that the problem occured after the bike sat for 4-5 months?

Yup, sounds gummed. Particularly the pilot circuit.

I had one jet that was pluged solid in mine !!!

Thanks for the replys. How hard is it to get to carb. Can you clean the jets with the carb installed or do you have to take the carb off. If so, How hard is that. Does anyone have instructions to do it?

You will save yourself a lot of time and frustration in the long run if you just take it off, disassemble completely, and THOROUGHLY clean it. Those tiny passageways and tiny jet holes need clearing out.

like lancer said, take it out. Go to the tech sect for details, but basically, it involves taking off:

the seat
the tank
the battery & battery box
the snorkel

While it's off, I suggest stuffing a clean rag a little way into the intake so you don't get stuff in there. Also, make sure you do your work on a bench, not on the floor... A magnetic #1 philips will help a lot if you need to take off the needle.
