Hello all. I'm new here, but you'll probably hear a lot from me. I was just given (free!) a 1996 Savage that my mother-in-law's boyfriend has had sitting in storage for a year and a half. It has more than a few "issues," and I'm no mechanic, but I'll do my best.

The first problem I have is that the key is stuck in the "P" position. It will come out, but the thing will not budge when you try to turn it. I've tried putting WD40 on the key, as well as in the hole, but nothing seems to work. Any suggestions?

Continue with the WD40, injecting a good squirt in the assembly several times each day, for a few days, and see if that won't loosen things up. Be FIRM when trying to turn the key but do not FORCE it.

I bought a topper used for my old truck and it had side window's that lifted up anyhow the locks did not work. I took it to a lock smith and he squirted some black powder in it and it was fine. Aslo if all else fails I have an extra key lock.

Byron,

This is just a guess, but it sounds like one or more of the tumblers is stuck. Those are the little spring loaded pins that move when the key is inserted.

The only suggestion I have is to squirt WD40 in the lock and insert the key over and over. You might carefully try a bent paper clip to rake across the tumblers, too. just don't get it stuck in there.

why not hot wire it?? You can buy the ignitian switch later. :o

Well, I guess a few days of playing with it finally did the trick. It finally worked today.

Now, the real fun begins: Hooking the carburetor back up and fixing the seized front brakes.

Then I get to ride it. :)

haha my front brake is seized at the moment as well. its in the basement and the end of the hydrolic line is zip tied to the fork for now..

When You are fixing the brakes, don't forget to clean the pasasages in the master cyl. You will have to flush the brake sistem couple of times, but this is down the road.
And one more thing- while everything is apart- spray WD40 in all the el. connectors , take them apart, clean them and put them back together with some grease. This WILL save You troubles later on.

not to knock the wd40 but would suggest using a graphite lube powder only if available, wd40 works good but the graphite powder does the same without collecting crap due to the oil base.
