Title: Handle Bar Opinion
Post by USCG Cremeans on 03/21/06 at 14:42:27

What do you all think of this:

Handlebar 1 inch, Square (http://www.baddogstyles.com/Scripts/prodView.asp?idproduct=1729)

vs.

4 1/2 pullback risers and this bar

Bikers Choice Drag Bar V-Twin Handlebars (http://harley-davidson.ridegear.com/cgi-bin/SoftCart.exe/shop/Harley_Handlebars/F-8781_Drag_Bar_V-Twin_Handlebars.html?E+scstore)

top one would end up costing less and could be adjustable a bit.

ps: i am 6'4" so i would be aiming for something that wont cramp my arms.

last question: what are beach bars and how do they ride?

6 feet 1inch.....I went to HD, sat on the bikes and picked one.
They did me a deal on exhaust. (I gave em some T-shirts)
FLX bars are on my LS650!!!

I would like to see the first ones on a bike. They look pretty cool.

Even if the second ones give you the reach you need I think you'll still have a lot of pressure on your wrists because you will tend to lean on them (just to low). And I'm not knocking them I think they look cool and I have friends that have them on different bikes and swear by them.

From riding dirt I found that in riding hard I keep a lot of pressure on my wrists, so when chilling or riding home I've found the best setup to be back almost straight, arms not fully extended and should not have to hold you from falling back or front.

It seems like the stock is going to work well for me, but I'm shorter. But I won't know until the bike is back together and I actually get to ride it.

im just afraid the first one will look too big on the bike, but its simple i just hook it into the old clamps etc. and its cheaper..

I found these...
DRAG HANDLEBAR FOR HARLEY 1" DIAMETER 26" WIDE (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/DRAG-HANDLEBAR-FOR-HARLEY-1-DIAMETER-26-WIDE_W0QQitemZ4623211692QQcategoryZ35557QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem)

way cheaper ($16 + $7 shipping) but I wish they didn't have the dimples.  Anyone seen anything similar without?
I haven't called to see if they offer dimple-free yet.
I also noticed a post here somewhere on using deep-well sockets as risers.  Looked neat!

The first ones might be a half inch taller than stock from what I could measure. The width of stock is about the same 27 inches. It's the pullback thats about 1/3 of the stock. The base is actually quite a bit narrower than stock.

The difference in posture of the first and second choice is pretty dramatic though :) Drag bars vs. Chopper's

You may want to take Clueless's advice and go try some out.

I found some 4" pull back, 4" rise, 30" width bars on ebay, no clue what they look like yet, but I hope to get them by the weekend and install.  I'll take pics when I do and post, along with me on it to show the position change (I am 6'2", so it'll give SOME indication)

the nice thing about the first option is i can tilt them forward or backwards more., since they will mount on the old clamps.  This may turn out useful to help adjust them to fit me well.  I'm kinda aiming for the stock s40 look, i like that style

My 05 S-40 has the flat bars that measure approx. 23 in. across.  Too short for my taste.  My hands are too close together and at slow speeds the bike tends to wobble somewhat. I like a bar that is 32 or so in. across. Any suggestions at to what bar will fill the bill?  Maybe one of the HD Sportsters?  Comments please.

My S40 stock bars felt a little narrow too. I put HD Sportster bars on & I like the feel. They're about 29" from grip end to grip end so the bar alone is about 27" wide. There's about a 4" rise though & I removed my risers to lower them. The grips angle back a little more than the flat bar which I find comfortable.

For Babbalou - Any problem with the cables?  Could you use the orig. cables or did you need to get others?  If so where did you get them?

Just won this auction,

Finally Figured this link thing out > EBAY AUCTION (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=4623061589&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWN%3AIT&rd=1)

so i think i will try those bars, and relist the top triple tree to get a few bills back.  If i don't like those bars ill use the risers with it and try some cheap drag bars or soemthing like that.. i figure the auction was worth it for the grips and throttle boss alone if i can make them work correct.

The handlebars pictured in the auction are what I put on my 87. Feel and look much better and they are nice and wide for superior control. Good Choice!!

I had the same handle bar on my bike last year. Took it of because I could not fit the bullseye blinkers on.  With forward controls and the seat raised it was a comfortable ride.

The cables reached but only because I removed the risers. I had to find 2 more bolts for the clamps so it was more trouble than I originally expected. I got the bar at JP Cycles. If I had to do it all over again I would have looked for just a wider flat bar & left everything else the same. That's an easy switch. I don't know if the cables would reach on a bar wider than 30". They might on a 27-28 one. Best of luck with it.

I'm glad i stumbled upon the auction and was able to win it without too much trouble.  Seems like a low cost for all the items invovled, and what i don't use ill just sell.  I still don'nt know what that triple tree is from though.

To Bubbalou - Thanks for the info re the cables.  I think I will follow your advice and go with a wider flat bar.  The riding poaition is fine, but my hands are just too close together and I don't feel I am in complete control.

My bike is in Maine and I won't be getting up there until late June.  I have plans for the white spacer mod, main jet change, Russell Day-Long seat, Super Trapp muffler, 12.5 in. Progressive shocks, K&N filter and the wider bars.  Also a Super Brace if supply catches up with demand  It will be a busy summer, but by the time the frost is on the pumpkin, I should have a very serious thumper.  CAN'T WAIT!!!

Just saw your bike on the show us your ride thread. Heck of a transformation. Great job. Can seem like a lot of work, but I think well worth the time spent.
Decided whether to go with tank graphics or not? I think savages look really good without it, but I haven't finalized anything.
Mass ey. I'm originally from RI Scituate actually not Scituate Mass.

haha scituate rhode island you say?  well i think im going to hold off on the tank graphics for now i reall like the chrome/orange/black look.  looks real clean.  I have some harley handlebars coming soon and they should be more comfortable and add a bit to the look of the bike as well.  Thanks for the compliments, where are you living now? do you miss new england  ;D?

Rains a lot in the winter, the summers are awesome here. 16 almost 17 hours of daylight in midsummer. Very little rain. Riding heaven. Mountains, Volcanos, A rain forest with giant trees. The ocean and a bunch of lakes.

I still miss NE. I get to go back though, they haven't told me I wasn't welcome yet.
