Title: Valve adjustment (.08" & .13"?)
Post by HotFix on 03/15/06 at 14:15:49

I just did a number on my valves.  I replaced the park plug, adjusted the decompression cable and jumped in the valves for an adjustment.  They were all too tight.  I adjusted them to .08" on the intake and .13" on the exhaust.

Started the thing up (much easier with the new plug and correct decompression setting) and it sounded like crap.  The valves were chattering bad.

I have adjust V Twins, but not a Thumper.  I rotated the crank case over to the mark and made sure I was on the compression setting by wiggling the exhaust valves (first time - no movement.  Another 180 did the trick).

Are the proper clearances indeed .08" on intake and .13" on exhaust?

should be 0.003- 0.005"

No they are not.
You can adjust  both , intake and exhaust , valves between 0.08 and 0.13 MM, not inches.
In inches we are talking anything inbetween 0.003-0.005

Sorry - got my units wrong.  I went back in and one valve was WAYYYY OFF.  How did that happen?  It was a rush job.  I just re did it and didn't cut any corners this time.  Let's see how it runs this time...

That is what Das' Savage sould sound like!  Oh Yeah!

I took plenty of pics during the engine tune up.  Should I put something in the Tech corner?

i wouldn't complain if you made a  "valve adjustment" thread in the tech section. im sure it would help others, me included.

Check out Dan's Motorcycle Repair Course (http://www.dansmc.com/MC_repaircourse.htm),  He has a Valve Adjustment (http://www.dansmc.com/valveclearence.htm) section.  While not Savage-specific, I think it's a very good site.

I just did my first valve adjustment this last weekend, I found TDC by watching the valves, but I didn't find any freeplay in the rock arms. After I backed the locknut off the valve adjuster and rotated the adjuster screw out a few turns, then there was free play, but nothing perceptible before then. To adjust the valves we backed them way out (10-20 turns?), then slid the feeler gauge in there, and tightened it down until we felt some friction on a 5 mil gauge, then gave another 1/4 turn.

Just wondering if we did anything wrong, since I have no idea what free play they were talking about. You're really suppose to be able to feel 5 mils? I'm not sure I would be able to slide a 3mil gauge in there to check since its such tight quarters.

Jeff

I really don't think you will 'feel' .005".  I always check the free play on the exhaust (closes to the pipe).  that clearance is always more because of the volume of the hot gases expelled.

One finger can make a .012" valve clearance make a loud tapping noise (and perceivable movement).  That is when I know.  The intakes are usually too tight to tell.

Those Feeler gauges look useless.  I would hate to use them in a small MC engine.

I bought mine from Sears.  I got the angled set.  I clipped the ends and the feet to fit inside 650 cylinders (I also have a 1300 V twin) and dremeled the burs smooth.  I did this with just the .005" to .014" and used a red Sharpy to  label them 5,6...13,14 (hence my confusion at the top)

Those feeler gauges (shown in the link) are angled and actually work pretty well.  I have them and have used them on my Savage.
