Title: A quick mock up...
Post by WD on 03/14/06 at 14:28:58

I might have to just skip the sprung solo seat and hardtail conversion. I kinda like it THIS way...

That is going from THIS funk and nastiness:

Vulcan 800A spare seat. Keeping the 14 inch apehangers, just rotated them forwards a few inches. Not sure on the mirros yet. Blacking out the exhaust. There WILL be some form of "chick stick", a tool roll,  matching paint on the tins. Cheapo headlight, cateye taillight, grilled rear signals (to be replaced by mini signals with red lenses) on old stock Hap Jones side mount headlight bar (modified to work on rear). Keeping a fishtail exhaust, may go back to mufflerless.

What do you all think of THIS mock-up versus what I thought of doing? And add dual disc front (the drum is F'd up) or keep the single disc?

Okay Perry, cut loose on it... ;D

I think it looks great but I"m not a fan of those handlebars.

What's that about a brake mod?

I'm 6'2" and change. Trust me, with stock buckhorns or drag (gag) bars, the thing was nearly unridable. Might rotate them straight up, gives me a few more inches of stretch in my arms. Take a gander at my avatar, that is the same bike, that is me, my arm is too close to my torso.

The brake mod? I might bolt on a complete dual disc front end off an older Kawi KZ four popper. Have a choice of spokes or cast alloys.

So you'd be replacing the forks as well?  The Kawasaki dual brakes would probably be fantastic.

I'm liking that WD! That Vulcan seat looks comfy ... though a solo saddle would jive more with the retro look (just MHO ...) ... that tank is awesome! Is it gonna be hard to fit on there?

Like the seat and the tank. Dual brakes will give you enough stopping power
Watch out for those apehangers :-/

I really like the look of that a lot.  That seat/tank/apes combo works.  I actually like the look of the apes too but I kinda doubt I'd like the feel.  I guess I'll have to try it sometime to find out.  Anyway, that's looking really good.

i like the look of it too,but you really have to do something with those cables they kill the whole look of the bike.

Definitely like the fishtail and the apes.  Cool tank.  Go with a different fender and spoked wheels

I like the simplicity and maintenence-free aspect of alloy wheels but the spoked look has grown on me.  I must admit to a fondness for the dinner plates on HD Fat Boys though.

WD  Are you standing on a box in that pic??    ;D

Samm, nope, I really do dwarf the bike that badly...   :o

Perry, tank fit is a piece of cake, Dremel off the frame lugs from the stock tank and it will fit as though made for it. Solo seat? Maybe... but only with an old Bates pillion or a 45 flattie luggage rack.

Vroom, debating an old one piece FL rear fender, no front.

I'm going for the 1972ish Brit bike look. Savages ARE a slightly modernized Brit knock-off...

Hmmm.... I'm thinkin' it'll look pretty dope with an FL rear fender, no front fender, apes, struts, and a sprung solo.  What color(s)?

Too bad your drum is wrecked, or you could forgo the front brake alltogether... on the otehr hand, the transmission can slow you down some... ;)

BTW,  what is that gas tank off of?  I've got a mustang tank I'd love to fit, but, no, not even close...

The gas tank? C'mon Vroom, I thought you knew OLD bikes... ;D It's off a BSA from the 1960s. It's worth about $300 as it sits, I gave a customer $50 for it... ::)

The FL fender in question is a non-hinged version, very 1936-47 Knucklehead-esque.

Color? Same as the side panels, candy tangeringe over bronze micro-flake (metallic pearl). Probably a platinum pearl for the frame, maybe some tank scallops to match. If I go with a sprung solo, it would have to be a natural saddle tan leather, I really don't like what vinyl seats do to me bum... :P If I keep the shocks, I've got a fringed and studded black leather solo off an FXR that should bolt right on. Too early to sweat THAT detail. Still in the engineering stage for this thing.

Oh, and probably metalflake silver retro grips (bicycle type).

As for the currently exposed cables, um, no. I'll order a properly sized set from Lancer when the time comes.

You can get reproduction British tanks now. I just chose to use a real Made in England one. Why buy Chinese parts when I can score the real deal cheap at work? If i go with the FL rear fender, it will mount on the swingarm. And so will the chick stick. Think Kawi Drifter 1500 if it is shocked, 800 Drifter if strutted... I really dislike the fender to tire gap as it stands now.

Out of curiosity, since I think we're currently working along similar lines of thought...how difficult is that tank going to be to mount (granted, it's always harder than it looks like it will be...at least, that's the way it always goes for me)?

The more I look, the better I like the ape-hangers. D@mn it...hanging out here gives too many things to try!!!

Clueless, trust me, THIS board is ratrher harmless... Tryt hanging out at The Horse board sometime, those guys are toony lunes... ::) Oh, wait, I hang out there... ;D

Apehangers on a Savage? Comfortable, relatively easy conversion (extend a few wires and get longer cables), goes well with the "retro" flavor of even otherwise stock Savages.

These bikes have loads of potential. Especially if you love to tinker like I do.  The Suzuki LS650 Savage, the best Matchless England never made...
