Title: saddlebags
Post by newguy on 03/13/06 at 06:17:21

Looking to put saddlebags on my bike in the near future but have never owned a set. What do I need to know before purchasing?  ie dimensions(to clear the exhaust), brackets, brand, etc.

Most any bag in the small to medium size should work ok.  I have had both and no problem.  I highly recommend saddle bag supports though.  I didn't have them on my first Savage and the bags chafed up the bike pretty bad.  I made the set I am using now.  It is not hard but requires a bit of ingenuity.

I've seen too many sagging leather (or synthetic) soft bags; so I went with hard bags:

When looking for bags you can get bags that fit the stock turn signal location, or larger bags with relocated turn signals.

I run Willie and Max Compact Studded Slants on mine.

I don't do cage if I can help it.  I far prefer riding home in the rain to driving home in the sun.  One saddlebag can hold two gallon jugs of milk, or a 10 pound sack of potatos with a couple pounds of onions, or a five-liter box of wine.  (I used to hate the fuel costs of going to the store in the cage for a couple of items.)

Soft versus hard:  hard bags cannot be over-stuffed.
