Hi all.

I want to remove my sissy bar, but can i remove it without scratching the h**l out of the fender, without removing the rail ? Have anyone tryed ?
Btw dont say I just san cut it off ;D

The sissy bar is attached with 3 bolts.

First, there is a 6 mm allen head bolt that you can access from the underside of the rail.

Second, the rear fender rail bolt is threaded into the sissy bar. You can get to that with a 12 mm wrench. A ratcheting box end (gear wrench) works well.

Third, there is a bolt that bolts through the side rail into the sissy bar ust above the fender. It has a 12 mm hex head, too. Unfortunately, this bolt is partially recessed in the fender rail so you can't get to it with a open end or box end wrench. The bolt is so close to the fender that you can't get a socket on it. My guess is that you will have to remove both fender rails to get to the those bolts. If you find a way to do that without removing the rails, let us know.

i wonder if you could remove lets say all but two bolts and justpivot the sissy bar and rails forward? i may try it to see how it works. May scratch the paint though

In my experience it is better to plan on removing the side rails and sissy bar as an assembly after carefully taping the fender or you will scatch the paint. Would be best to have some help to slightly spread and lift the assembly up and off. Max

LOL!! My thoughts exactly! Love the look of the LS650 without the sissy bar (a la S40), but just can't bare to part with my handy-dandy helmet hanger!

i had to pay extra for my sissy bar (s 40) wouldnt carry the wife without it she flew off the back of our lil ct 70 clone and shes still learning how to be a good passenger..shes had one lesson driving the ct 70 maybe with a few more itll help her sissy better.. 8)
edit: when i put the sissy bar and new rails on i scratched the fender(color rite fixed) get some help to spread....

I assume you mean you would leave on bolt on each side. That is definitely possible.

On my 97, the sissy bar spreads the rails apart. When you remove the bolts, the side rails spring out away from the fender. If you remove all but the most forward bolt and loosen that a bit, it should rotate up. But the turn signal wires are also routed through the side rails so that there's only so much you can rotate it.

I think a better plan is to remove all the bolts and have someone hold the assembly in place to keep from scratching the paint.

The funny thing is i just put it back on... but it looks out of place since the pad is faded and ripped and i now have a new harley seat on there. the way the harley seat rounds off in the back gives the bike a nice look, so im considering removing the sissy bar for now. I just got my moto permit, which here in mass means i can't have a passenger till i get my license anyway.. we shall see

I know its a darn good helmet hanger, but i have desided on getting rid of the sissy bar anyway !

The reason i want to get it off is because of this ;D

The misses bought me one of these fine seats 8) And i think it looks better without the sissy !
