Title: Can you help me?
Post by Michal Krska on 03/12/06 at 00:38:46

First I have to apologize for my english because I am from  the Czech republic. So my problem is...I bought used LS 650 PV  itīs US version speedometer-miles.... I got some documents with operating data so this bike might be 1997 version. I checked some web sites and compared all what is typical for 1997, serial frame number(VIN)- yes itīs realy LS 650PV but I am not sure about the engine. For exapmle carburetor I was surprised because since 1995 Savage has carburetor with horizontal drain plug :( and my own has vertical. I have started to be afraid... I bought bike with an old engine?! My question is what is typical for engine made in 1997?Do you have any ideas how can I know that? I am looking for chart with engine numbers there should be my answer. Thanks for your help    Michal Krska

Hi Michal
Welcome to the forum from The Netherlands.
To my knowledge  of the carburators all have vertical drainplugs. To get the year of built of the bike: there's a stamped date on the front and rear roms of the wheels. Can be one year earlier than the delivery date. My 1993 has a date stamp of 1992 in the rims. As for engine serialnumbers; I have not a clue.

Welcome Michal. There are some good carb photos in the Technical Documents section here. You might also want to compare engine serial numbers with other owners of '97s. If you have a Suzuki dealer nearby, they might be able to verify your serial numbers.

Michal,

The carburetor on my 97 Savage has a vertical drain plug.  I believe the engine is original.

If there is anything I can check for you, let me know.

Steve

Hey Michal,
All the Savage carburetors that I know are with vertical drain plug.
Basically there are 2 different engines for the US models for all the years-
86-88 is with 4 gears
96- later with 5 gears.
Don't worry about the exact year, the parts are the same.

Maybe soemone changed the carb?  The stock US carb is a Mikuni BS 40.

it is a nice looking bike if everything works okay, i say ride it and enjoy. and if something is different with the carb. (which i do not know) i 'll bet the internals are still almost the same

My '95 has the vertical drain plug that you remove to drain, be careful with it looks very easy to strip out -  and the '02 has the other. I've had both carbs apart and see no difference with the exception of the carburetor bowl.

The stock carb from my '98 also has a simple remove-to-drain plug in the bottom.
